Pantry tracking, a real meal planner, and conversational search — v1.1.0 is live

Hey folks,

My co-founder and I build Recipe Boss, an iPhone app for those nights when you're staring into the fridge and drawing a complete blank.

We just finished v1.1.0. The version number makes it sound small, but the app feels quite different now.

The biggest change is that you can talk through a dinner idea instead of filling out a search form. You can say something vague like "I want something cozy that takes 30 minutes," add what you have, mention an allergy, and keep adjusting the idea until it sounds worth cooking. If you ask to be surprised, it also tries not to keep handing you the same few dishes.

We added a proper pantry too. You can keep track of what you have, scan ingredients or a receipt, and use that when asking for ideas. It might even save you from buying a third jar of something that was hiding at the back of the cupboard.

There is also a meal planner that lets you choose meals one slot at a time. It does not decide your whole week for you. Once you are happy with the plan, it makes a grouped shopping list that you can share or send to Reminders.

Cook Mode got some attention as well. You can run several timers at once, keep them visible while moving through the steps, and tap one to jump back to where it started. Recipes can also be scaled for the number of people actually turning up for dinner.

The honest bits: the free version has ads. Pantry and receipt scanning are part of Premium. The Kitchen Essentials section contains clearly marked affiliate links. None of those links open unless you tap them.

The app can take saved allergies into account and offer a safer adaptation when a traditional dish conflicts with one. Please still check ingredient labels and use your own judgment, especially with a serious allergy.

There are only two of us building this, so useful criticism has a pretty short trip to the people who can fix it. If you try the update, tell me what feels clumsy, confusing, or pointless. "This took three taps and made no sense" is genuinely helpful.

App Store: https://apps.apple.com/us/app/recipe-boss-smarter-cooking/id6748914672

I'm happy to answer questions, including awkward ones about ads, pricing, or why we made something a certain way.

5 Easy Dinners to Make This Week When You Want Something Different

Monday dinners have to be practical, but this week I wanted to prove practical doesn't have to mean boring. So this week's RecipeBoss roundup has five completely different dinner vibes — pick whichever one matches your night.

Here's what's on the list:

🥔 Crispy Garlic Butter Chickpeas with Roasted Potatoes A hearty vegetarian main with crispy pan-fried chickpeas and roasted potatoes tossed in garlic butter, parsley, and lemon.

🥜 Spicy Peanut Noodles with Cucumber A fast one with a creamy peanut-sriracha sauce and cool cucumber for crunch. On the table in 25 minutes.

🍗 Crispy Honey Mustard Chicken Breaded chicken thighs finished in a honey-mustard-vinegar glaze — comfort food with a crispy coating.

🐟 Sweet Chili Glazed Salmon Rice Bowls Glazed salmon over rice with cucumber, scallions, cilantro, and lime. Light, but still packed with flavor.

🌶️ Spicy Sausage, Peppers & White Beans Skillet One pan, minimal cleanup — Italian sausage, peppers, cannellini beans, and crushed tomatoes.

I tried to cover the full range this week: something vegetarian, something fast, something rich, something light, and something with basically no cleanup. Whatever kind of night you're having, there's an option here.

Dutch Babies, Fried Green Tomato BLTs & Sticky Meatballs: 5 Recipes for the Weekend

I pulled together a pretty varied group of recipes for this weekend's RecipeBoss roundup. There's brunch, something to bake for breakfast, a couple of seriously good sandwich ideas, and meatballs that could work as either an appetizer or dinner.

Here's what made the list:

Savory Tomato & Cheddar Dutch Baby
A savory take on the oven-baked pancake with sharp cheddar and sun-dried tomatoes. Only about 30 minutes from start to finish.

Blueberry Oatmeal Breakfast Bars
Rolled oats, fresh blueberries, cinnamon, brown sugar, and lemon zest baked into easy breakfast bars.

Crispy Fried Green Tomato BLT with Spicy Aioli
Cornmeal-crusted green tomatoes, crispy bacon, lettuce, and a sriracha-lime aioli on toasted sourdough. This might be my favorite of the five.

Crispy Chicken Cutlet Sandwich with Tomato & Basil
Panko-crusted chicken with a little lemon zest, ripe tomatoes, fresh basil, and mayo on a toasted bun.

Sticky Honey Garlic Pork Meatballs
Pork meatballs simmered in a sticky sauce made with honey, soy sauce, garlic, ginger, rice vinegar, and sesame oil.

The full recipes are in today's post:

Corn, Eggplant, Basil & Peaches: 5 Recipes for the Last Stretch of Summer

I'm trying to make the most of late-summer produce while it's still around, so this week's RecipeBoss roundup leans into corn, peppers, eggplant, fresh basil, and peaches.

Here's what's on the list:

🌽 Corn, Pepper & Egg Tostadas
Crispy corn tortillas topped with avocado, scrambled eggs, peppers, cotija, lime, and a little chipotle.

🍆 Mediterranean Eggplant Pitas
Roasted spiced eggplant tucked into warm pita with cucumber and a fresh mint and parsley yogurt sauce.

🌿 Basil Chicken Stir Fry with Peppers
A 30-minute stir fry with chicken, bell peppers, red onion, garlic, ginger, plenty of fresh basil, and lime.

🫘 Black Bean & Roasted Pepper Enchiladas
Black beans, roasted red peppers, Monterey Jack, and warm spices baked in corn tortillas and finished with smoky chipotle crema.

🍑 Pan-Seared Pork Chops with Fresh Peach Salsa
Golden pork chops topped with a simple salsa of fresh peaches, jalapeño, red onion, cilantro, and lime.

I wanted this roundup to be less about another collection of generic weeknight dinners and more about finding different ways to use ingredients that are especially good in August.
