Looking for the absolute cheapest "emergency/occasional" mobile plan in NL

Hi everyone,

I'm looking for a bare-minimum, extremely cheap mobile plan in Newfoundland. This would be for a secondary phone used only for occasional calls and text messages.

I know Koodo has a $100/year ($8.33/month) prepaid plan, but it actually gives me more minutes than I need. I'm trying to find out if there is an even cheaper "pay-as-you-go" or annual option available here. I don't need any data at all—just the ability to receive/send a text or make a quick call once in a while.

Does anyone know of a provider or specific plan available in NL that beats the $100/year mark?

Thank you in advance!

Edit. This is for a relative who may occasionally need to contact me when outside. So I am not interested in the options requiring data as if they have data they can just contact me via messenger. Also this is something which will be needed a couple of months in Spring, Sept, Oct, Nov. Basically when there is school and the weather isn't bad in Newfoundland. So, maybe I just use monthly options for the required months only.

Understanding sun protection on cloudy days: What's the best approach?

Hello,

I'm curious to hear from the community on navigating UV exposure when the index is 3 or higher, but the sky is overcast.

On one hand, UV rays can still penetrate cloud cover, posing risks to skin health. On the other, there are ongoing discussions about balancing this protection with ingredient considerations.

What are your thoughts or established best practices for making this decision?

Thank you in advance.

Hello, I am hoping to get some advice about an international travel situation involving my two children.

**Background:**

- I am married, living in Newfoundland, Canada

- We have two children — ages 7 and 3.

- My wife is planning to travel to our home country with both children from July 4th to August 28th (return tickets already purchased)

- Our home country is in Eastern Europe and IS a signatory to the Hague Convention on the Civil Aspects of International Child Abduction — however I am uncertain about the practical enforcement between Canada and that country

- All family members — myself, my wife, and both children — hold dual citizenship of both Canada and our home country

- We are currently in a difficult period in our marriage — we nearly divorced recently and things remain strained

- There is no custody agreement or court order in place as we are still married

**My concern:**

I want to allow my wife and children to travel as planned, and I genuinely hope they return as scheduled. However given the state of our marriage I am concerned about the possibility that she may decide not to return with the children after Aug 28h.

While I understand the Hague Convention provides some protection, I am uncertain about how effectively it would be enforced in practice, and whether the children's dual citizenship of the destination country creates additional legal complications.

**What I want to know:**

  1. What actually happens legally if she does not return with the children on Aug 28th as the tickets indicate? What are my options under the Hague Convention and how difficult would it be to get the children back in practice?

  2. Does the fact that the children hold dual citizenship of the destination country create additional legal complications for me if she decides to stay? Could the destination country treat them as domestic citizens rather than internationally abducted children?

  3. What steps should I take RIGHT NOW to legally protect myself and ensure the children's return, while still allowing them to travel? I want to be reasonable and not prevent the trip, but I also want legal protection in place.

  4. Is there any document I can have prepared and signed before they leave — such as a notarized travel consent letter specifying return date — that would carry legal weight either in Canada or the destination country?

  5. Should I be filing for any kind of court order before they leave, and if so what type and how urgently?

  6. Are there any government bodies or agencies I should be contacting proactively — such as Global Affairs Canada — and what exactly can they do to help?

  7. How does the dual citizenship complicate or affect the Hague Convention process specifically?

I am not trying to prevent the trip or create conflict. I simply want to understand my legal position and take appropriate protective steps before they depart.

Any advice from people with experience in Canadian family law or international parental abduction situations would be greatly appreciated. Thank you.
