should i use my main pc or an old laptop for a home server i only turn on occasionally?
i have a powerful desktop pc running cachyos, and i also have a very old laptop with only 4gb of ram.
i want to use my pc as a kind of personal cloud while i'm away for long trips. basically, i'd like to access my photos, movies, tv shows, music, ebooks and files remotely. i'm thinking about using things like immich, jellyfin and maybe kavita.
i don't need it to be running 24/7. i would mainly turn it on when i'm going away for 1–2 weeks, leave it running during the trip, and turn it off when i get back.
so what would you guys recommend? should i just run everything on my main cachyos pc, or should i turn the old laptop into a dedicated nas/server with something like casaos and only turn it on when i'm traveling?
is anyone using a setup like this? i'm mainly looking for the simplest and most practical solution.
dual monitor issues on cachyos-kde: login screen rotation and desktop artifacts?
hey everyone,
i really love cachyos, but these issues are driving me crazy. i searched a lot and tried many things, but nothing works.
system specs:
os: cachyos x86_64
de / wm: kde plasma 6.7.4 with kwin (wayland)
gpu: amd radeon rx 9070 xt
cpu: amd ryzen 7 9700x
primary monitor: 32-inch 4k ips (horizontal)
secondary monitor: 27-inch 2k ips (vertical)
issue 1: login screen orientation (happens most of the time, not always)
when i boot or restart my pc, the login screen orientation gets messed up. my primary horizontal monitor turns vertical, and the second vertical monitor turns horizontal with a black block taking up part of the screen.
issue 2: desktop pixel artifacts (happens sometimes)
sometimes on the desktop, there are small squares that look like pixel corruption or a broken render. i tried to point them out in the photos.
what i already tried:
synced desktop and login screen display settings.
tried matching the hz, using the same hz on both. (the 2k one is 200 hz, the 4k one is 144 hz, and right now i am using both at 120 hz)
tried integer scaling (100, 125, 150 etc., tested all of them).
how can i fix these problems? any advice? thanks.
Windows 11 to SteamOS with dual monitors
Hi everyone,
I’m thinking about switching from Windows 11 to SteamOS, but I use a dual-monitor setup. Does SteamOS Gaming Mode support displaying output on two monitors, or can I only use both monitors in Desktop Mode?
Thanks.
does anyone know if ipadOS 27 will support multiple slide over windows?
I really wish Apple would bring back support for multiple Slide Over windows on iPad.
The new window management features are a great step forward, but only being able to have a single Slide Over window feels unnecessarily limiting. I used to love keeping multiple apps tucked away for quick access without cluttering the screen.
Has Apple said anything about this? Is there any rumor that iPadOS 27 might allow multiple Slide Over windows again, or is the feature gone for good?
I’d honestly use Slide Over a lot more if we could have more than one at a time.
Best Nintendo Switch Emulator for Zelda TOTK in 2026 / Right Now?
I mainly care about getting the best experience for TOTK, but I’ll probably play some Mario games too. Do they also run well on the current emulators?
Also, are there any recommended settings or tweaks for an AMD-Windows system to get the best performance and stability?
Thanks
SteamOS compatibility with Ryzen 7 9700X + RX 9070 XT?
I’m planning to build a PC with a Ryzen 7 9700X and an RX 9070 XT, and I’m wondering how good the current SteamOS compatibility is with this hardware.
If I install the latest available version of SteamOS right now, am I likely to run into any issues, bugs, driver quirks, or compatibility problems?
Also, when the official public PC version of SteamOS releases, will current installations likely be upgradeable through updates, or would a clean reinstall/reset probably be required?
Thanks.
