What does everyone think about “Marsies?”
What do y’all think about characters calling people on Mars “Marsies” instead of Martians?
I have a couple friends that watch FAM who agree it sounds silly, but it doesn’t bother them. I find it legitimately cringeworthy every time I hear it.
It’s frustrating because I generally enjoy running into things I dislike about/in my favorite shows; it makes me question why I think the way I do about certain things, and/or causes me to examine the dislikable moment(s) in relation to other aspects of the series. But “Marsies” just sounds terrible and there’s no deeper reason there. And for me, it requires a pretty steep suspension of disbelief because I genuinely cannot imagine anyone in their right mind being okay with getting called a “marsie.” Maybe if it was a slur used by earthers, but not as the regular term.
I’m also genuinely curious why they opted for Marsies instead of Martian. Was it to distinguish the FAM universe from other Sci-fi series? Wasn’t “Martian” already an established term by the year S1 began in? Why wouldn’t the characters in the universe adopt it?
