New Baltic with a Porcelain Dial

Baltic has partnered with Tokyo based microbrand retailer HMS Watch to release two new editions of the Prismic.

Limited to just 50 pieces in each colorway, this special edition brings a porcelain dial to the Prismic lineup, which I believe is a first for Baltic.

And it’s not just the porcelain, you’ve also got the crosshair and kanji characters around the minute track at 3, 6, 9, and 12. This doesn’t feel like HMS simply taking an existing model and giving it a new color. There’s quite a bit here that makes the watch feel different.

At around €1800, these porcelain-dial versions are about €500 more than the regular Prismic with the stone dial.

Straum with a Strong Case

I was at the Toronto Timepiece Show and got to see how the new case for the Expedition model has evolved from the Jan Mayen line, and I’m totally in love with the new one.

With this new case, they’ve added a stepped bezel so that the sapphire crystal no longer protrudes from the case. This means that, in the event of a side impact, the taller bezel takes the hit before the sapphire does.

Beyond the added protection, I think the stepped bezel also gives the case a much more interesting profile. It breaks up what was otherwise a rather wide and bare bezel on the Jan Mayen case. I also really like that they’ve opted not to polish the edges, giving the case a more utilitarian look. It adds a bit more character to the design, and I’m absolutely here for it.

The crown guard now sticks out further to give the crown better protection, and its shape has also been refined. It’s a small change, but one that makes a noticeable difference when you have the two watches side by side.

A cool little side note: Lasse, one of the co-founders of Straum, actually wore this very watch while filming their mountain-climbing content, and you can see all the dents and scratches from their adventure.

Studio Underdog Fried Egg x2

I can't believe I just bumped into a stranger (not at a watch meetup) wearing the same limited edition piece on the same day. Glitch in the Matrix!
