Starting to like 1000D on my GR2 26L

I thought I'd post some observations about the 1000D back panel/shoulder straps after about 20 miles of rucking with my new GR2. I like it a lot better than I thought I would.

Compared to my Ruckers, the 1000D is obviously rougher but it also seems to stay in place better and, with the addition of a sternum strap, the pack really doesn't move at all on my back. It feels firmly in place and rock solid. Since I don't ruck shirtless, the 1000D has caused no chafing at all. It doesn't really feel any "warmer" (but it is hot and humid right now so anything will feel warm).

I'm finding the GR2 to take a while to "break in". Counterintuitively, it feels most comfortable with weight in it. I find it more comfortable on my rucks with about 25 pounds than I did using it as a travel bag with maybe 10 pounds in it.

I have yet to wear merino while using this but I can say it hasn't harmed my synthetic work out shirts at all.

Anyway, I had a bunch of concerns about the 1000D and now it is growing on me and I think I might actually prefer it once the pack is totally broken in.

Oh, one other thing, with weight in it, the GR2 26L feels just right on my back, not too short at all. I initially thought I'd prefer the GR1 26L but now I feel like the GR2 will work just fine. GoRuck packs seem to like having weight in them -- go figure!

Counterfeit Packs a Problem?

I know that many folks buy GoRuck packs on eBay. Is there any good way to know if the listings are legit or counterfeit? For example, this listing for a brand new GR1 26L for $259 shipped seems like a great deal... not saying this one in particular is counterfeit but is there any good way to tell? I'm looking for a new GR1 26L preferably with the 210D back panel.

Xmid 1

I recently discovered this Reddit and thought I’d post about a concern I have for my upcoming JMT hike next month. I purchased an x mid 1 earlier this year to replace my very old zPacks Hexamid Twin, which I loved but was totally worn down. I’ve only made it out a few times this year to hike along the AT (this pic was my first trip with the x mid in April). I’m heading out to the JMT in a few weeks.

I am new to this tent but not to the JMT (several long hikes) and I’ve also thru hiked the Colorado Trail and the first third of the PCT. I know that I have to do something to adapt the short stock guylines to allow for pitching with rocks and I’ve seen a number of possible solutions discussed. What concerns me is the need to keep the corners of the tent secured pretty close to the walls to preserve the correct geometry and not have the tent floor floating too high.

With the old Hexamid, I could tie it off to rocks without worrying too much about the geometry of the pitch somehow. I normally just tied off to large rocks. I replaced the stock guy lines on that tent with longer lines and a few times had to replace the lines because the rocks would abrade the lines. But I had close to 200 nights on that tent. I posted a photo of my Hexamid tied out to rocks on a long ago JMT thru hike.

Anyway, any words of wisdom would be appreciated. I have 100 feet of Lawson 2.5 mm glow wire for the guy line replacement project. I will probably opt to connect these to the stock line lock attached to the tent and then opt for a taut line hitch to make a loop at the end of the line to accommodate larger rocks.

Rucker 5.0 Break In

I’ve had my Rucker 5.0 25L for nearly two weeks now and have put 68 miles on it, mostly with dry weight of 35 pounds, unchanged from my typical Rucker 4.0 load out. At first, it was super stiff and the huge new lumbar support was not at all comfortable but within the first ten miles both the straps and the lumbar noticeably softened. After the first fifty miles, I really felt that the lumbar had molded to my back contour very well and it continues to feel better every day. I thought I’d mention this since the large lumbar pad was initially a big turnoff for me (I even returned the 5.0 at first before deciding to give it another shot).

I don’t recall the Rucker 4.0 20L taking as long to break in, but when I got it two years ago I was rucking with less weight and fewer miles per week. Over two years that pack really felt dialed in but the 5.0 is now just as comfortable — actually better since I can deploy the hip belt properly and that helps with weight transfer. I plan to gradually increase my load out to achieve 25% of my body weight (165 pounds, so just over 40 pounds, I’m already almost there).

Anyway, I’m a very satisfied GoRuck customer after returning from a 6.25 mile ruck this morning at a 16:37/mile pace!

Galls GR1

Has anyone purchased a 26L GR1 from Galls recently? They still list the back panel material as 210D and the customer support says it is 210D but they don’t hold the inventory directly, instead drop shipping from a vendor. And since GR has gone to 1000D all around I suspect the Galls product might be 1000D.

I have a new GR2 26L for travel but after one trip I feel like the longer torso length of the GR1 26L would work better for me. (Will probably sell the GR2 soon) I don’t really need the organization of the GR2. An additional upside of the GR1 would be the 210D, if that’s what Galls is really delivering. A bonus is that the price is discounted about $50 from GR website.

Rucker 4.0 EDC Carry

I recently upgraded to a Rucker 5.0 25L from the Rucker 40 20L that I've been using for two years. The 25L rides a lot better on my 6'1" frame with a hip belt and I'm liking the large lumbar support for loads over 40 pounds. This upgrade left me with the question of what to do with my Rucker 4.0 20L. It's in perfect shape even after two years of nearly daily rucking. I've always wanted a GR1 21L for EDC use but decided to convert my 4.0 Rucker instead and thought I'd write about what I did.

I kept the side MOLLE attachments I've used for rucking:

  1. Mini Tactical MOLLE pouch. I keep my keys and AirPods in this and can reach it while wearing the pack: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0D91JKHGX?ref=ppx_yo2ov_dt_b_fed_asin_title

  2. Gonex MOLLE water bottle holder. This holds either a SmartWater bottle or my 20 ounce thermal carafe perfectly and it's reachable while wearing the pack: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B01J7SZII4?ref=ppx_yo2ov_dt_b_fed_asin_title

  3. I tucked in the cover of the plate carrier into the LARGE plate pocket. This creates a perfect place to put my 13 inch MacBook Air in its sleeve - very well protected.

  4. Tucking in the plate carrier exposes the small plate carrier's velcro attachment point where I put this small pocket to hold a small notebook and pens: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0D5Y756KQ?ref=ppx_yo2ov_dt_b_fed_asin_title

  5. The Velcro closures for the two interior pockets are not acceptable for an EDC pack in my opinion so I used Condor Elite zipper strips to convert them to zippered pockets: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B074BDPSVT?ref=ppx_yo2ov_dt_b_fed_asin_title

The combination of all of these modifications makes this a terrific EDC pack for my use cases and it's a totally indestructible pack - I love it. Great to look forward to many decades of use now that it's retired from rucking. FWIW, I think the Rucker 4.0 is a better EDC conversion than the Rucker 5.0 because the very large lumbar on the 5.0 (while nice for rucking) would be kind of weird for an EDC bag. Also, GoRuck has made the embroidered GoRuck branding much more prominent on the 5.0 whereas on the 4.0 it is more subtle black on black embroidery.

Photos attached showing these mods.
