Belkin's "Lifetime Warranty" on surge protectors is apparently worthless. Here's what happened.
Let me save you some time if you're considering buying a Belkin surge protector based on their "Lifetime Warranty" promise: it means nothing if the product gets discontinued and you don't have a receipt.
My Belkin BG108000de2M bought in Germany developed a clear internal fault — welded relay contacts. The wireless switching still clicks, the "Protected" LED is still lit (MOV intact), no misuse, no physical damage, used exactly as specified on a properly earthed socket indoors. Textbook component failure. Nothing I did wrong.
I contacted Belkin support with a fully detailed technical description. Three email exchanges later, here's their position:
- ❌ No receipt = no warranty
- ❌ Product discontinued = no comparable replacement
- ❌ No refund unless bought directly from Belkin
- ❌ Photos of the unit and label not accepted as alternative proof
So Belkin's "Lifetime Warranty" in practice means: "We'll replace it if the product still exists, you kept your receipt from years ago, and you bought it directly from us." That's not a Lifetime Warranty. That's a very specifically limited warranty with a marketing label slapped on it.
The kicker? They confirmed in writing that there is no comparable replacement available. So even if I had the receipt, they couldn't do anything. They just kept asking for it anyway.
I'm not angry about the broken power strip. Hardware fails. I'm angry that Belkin actively markets "Lifetime Warranty" as a selling point while building in enough escape hatches to deny virtually every real-world claim.
If you're shopping for a surge protector and "Lifetime Warranty" is a factor — buy APC instead. Or keep every receipt forever. Or just assume you're on your own.
TL;DR: Belkin surge protector failed internally, no misuse. Belkin refused Lifetime Warranty claim: product discontinued, no receipt, no replacement, no refund. "Lifetime Warranty" lasted exactly as long as it was convenient for them.
