Anyone frustrated with the AI?

I'm fairly new to AMS2 (about two months now) and I absolutely love it. I have played it every single day and will continue to do so. It is far and away the best value on the market and far and away the best game I've ever owned. My only complaint is with the AI. My previous experience with driving sims before this was Geoff Crammond's GP series, so I've had like a 20 year gap between racing games. I had expected AI behavior in that time would improve, or at least maintain quality. But, even though AMS has the best AI of the current sims, it doesn't even come close to what was available 20-30 years ago.

The biggest problem is that they can just run nose to tail in large packs that never break up and never allow gaps. My typical experience is to come up behind a pack of 10-ish cars, pass one or two, then get surrounded on all sides until I invariably make contact with someone and get punted off. Or, a pack will catch me up and the same thing happens. If I happen to encounter a single AI, it works out fine -- either me being faster or the AI being faster. But the roving herds of AI are a constant problem. I'd desperately love to offline race and have exciting mid-pack battles, but the only races I've enjoyed so far are ones where I've either finished first or last. Anything in the middle and I just get ganged up on and punted off.

I've tried to modify AI behavior with the settings and xml files. And thank Reiza for that, because otherwise, it would be truly terrible. But, I still can't get the AI to "un-group" themselves. They seem to rubber-band each other way worse than they do with the human player.

TLDR, just an ai rant, feel free to downvote. And I'm not expecting anyone to offer a magical solution, but if it's out there, feel free to point me towards it.

Edit: fixed spelling.
