I’m looking for adult books about wholesomely kinky AF characters who grow
I just read Roan Parrish’s “Invitation to the Blues” like 10 times in a row, devoured most of her earlier books, and have been using romance.io to find anything similar—but would love to hear your recs for any (preferably spicy) romance featuring some combination of character growth, pleasure/gentle D/S dynamics, and/or healthy open relationships/polyamory.
I love Roan Parrish’s books because of how honest, funny, and realistic her characters feel—almost unlikeably flawed but somehow also lovable, sexy and human. I like how the spice feels like it’s advancing the plot and telling you more about the characters but also giving you a break from their problems. The mental health and neurodivergence rep is so so good, the politics are aligned for me, and the music & Philly tropes are great.
For reference, I also keep coming back to KJ Charles (especially the Will Darling series), the kink-adjacent books in Rachel Reid’s Game Changers, Emily Rath’s Pucking Around (the first few)—basically any book where the spice level is medium high or more and the D/S dynamics are both emotionally fulfilling and fun. Bonus points for characters with deep special interests, depictions of real friendships, honest mistakes, and imperfect but happy endings. I loved how Casey McQuiston wrote about queer sex and dynamics in the Pairing and also really like Skye Kilaen.
I read Sierra Simone’s Thornchapel series and loved some of it but got burned out on the characters’ emotional immaturity as the series wore on (and it got dark to be sure).
I struggle with fantasy but not opposed to it if it feels grounded—more ok with vampires, witches, or sci fi than with fae worlds. Most Likely To DNF bad D/S dynamics or abuse coded as DS, loads of jealousy talk, or characters who storm out of fights more than halfway through the book. Thanks!
