I looked through my collection today to see which dolls this first wave of Mirror Mi dolls takes inspiration from. I identified 14 dolls with some similarities to the new line.

Akiko: I see a bit of Lola with the brown eyes and the fluffy pink cat theme. Maybe a bit of Lily as she also of East Asian descent and aesthetically she has brown eyes and a natural hair color with some streaks and a somewhat similar hair style silhouette with the bangs and pigtails.

My Lila happens to have a paint defect on her lip that resembles the snaggle/fang tooth that Akiko has. I believe Lila is the only Japanese/half Japanese character in Rainbow High. I put her in the middle because, think her hair blend matches Luna’s a lot too.

Luna: I see inspiration from Jewel of course because of her vitiligo, but also the green theme. Luna has green eyes and bits of green throughout her outfit. I pulled Lilac because of her hair blend and because she’s on the tall Rainbow High body. When looking at the body comparisons of RH to MM, Mirror Mi is considerably taller.

Blaze: She’s a red girl- I see a lot of similarities to Ruby. She’s even styled a bit like Ruby too - a little tomboyish, rock starish. I think some of her darker elements feel like Scarlet.

Amora: I think her biggest influence is Daria. Dark skin, green eyes, lots of reddish pinks, similar stock hair style. I also see some of Pricilla and Pinkly in their design elements- the dress silhouettes, strappy heels, Pricilla’s sleeves, Pinkly’s purse ( I also think her purse looks a lot like the scrapped Fierce Candilicious doll’s heart purse).

PSA: My Daria has Kia’s eye chips.

Shai: Country girl Delilah is obviously a big inspiration- Her soft aesthetic, freckles, curly hair. And of course, Color and Create “Lamb” as preciously dubbed by the community. Lamb’s textured curly hair, face framing bangs, and freckles seem to also serve as a blueprint for Shai. All three girls seem to have albinism ( only Delilah confirmed).

Suki: The only doll with full body fantasy skin tone. She seems to take from Shadow High. Clearly the reincarnation of Delfina Young- a Rainbow High show character and never released New Friends character. Suki and Uma share pale skin with pink makeup accents, as well as vibrant blue hair. Suki and Eliza both have strait cut bangs and dreamy dress with cage skirt.

I’m wondering if MGAE is phasing out Rainbow High this year. Between the rumored release of the new doll line MirrorMi, the Rainbow High website being no longer supported, rumors of the collector dolls being scrapped, and the MGAE store website no longer prominently featuring the brand, I wonder what the future of the brand is?

If it’s truly ending, then I’m okay with that. The brand has declined so much. I’m sure some people still enjoy the new stuff, but if cutting the brand means putting resources toward a better quality line then I’m all for it.
