Person who filmed the viral video agrees with an IG post debunking the “car broke down in the hood” narrative, confirming Justin Bieber visited Watts Empowerment Center for charity events

"Back in 2018, Justin Bieber visited Watts’ Imperial Courts, where videos of the pop star quickly spread across social media.

Rumors began circulating that Bieber’s car had broken down in the neighborhood and that he had ended up there looking for help, but the story was different.

Bieber was there to visit the Watts Empowerment Center, a community recreation center located inside Imperial Courts that had reopened earlier that year after previously shutting down due to a lack of funding.

The center had been taken over and renovated by philanthropist Justin Mayo and his nonprofit Red Eye, with a focus on providing local youth with access to sports, education, creative programs, food, clothing and other resources.

Bieber’s visit was connected to Churchome, the church community he was involved with at the time. During his time at Imperial Courts, he played basketball and soccer with local youth, took photos with residents, did push-ups and even sang part of his song “Hold Tight.”

The center had also become known for bringing high-profile figures into the neighborhood, with Kim Kardashian, Kourtney Kardashian and Kris Jenner attending its 2018 reopening.

The moment became memorable because of how unusual it was to see one of the world’s biggest pop stars spending time inside Imperial Courts.

While social media turned his appearance into a story about Bieber supposedly getting stranded in the projects, he had actually made the trip to connect with the community and spend time at the Watts Empowerment Center."
