Is it worth reaching out to a publisher?

What the title says. I wonder if any of you have any experience getting in bed with a publisher, wether or not it is a good idea or if you should try to self-publish first. I mean should I try to contact content creators with my demo for a while before contacting publishers, or will that be bad for getting in touch with them later?
