Dscout on iOS 27 with WatchOS 27 - VPN Alert

Sharing again since it’s a known issue, but extremely challenging to identify the cause. Don’t give up! It’s an easy workaround (see below)! 😊

Issue: Dscout will detect the connection from iOS to the Apple Watch as a VPN and block your access to the application.

Fix: Disable the bluetooth connection to Apple Watch in iPhone settings while using Dscout.

Why: To support advanced Siri on the new OS, iPhone creates a silent VPN to the Apple Watch for secure communication. This is not a user-manageable connection.

Reach out to Dscout Support: Please take a moment to report this to the Dscout team to highlight this issue and validate when turning off Bluetooth, or disabling the Bluetooth connection for your watch, the VPN notification stops. This was reported during iOS 27 beta 2, however no development change has been noted thus far. It’s imperative they correct this invalid detection within their app, however I have not received direct confirmation they have or will be taking action. The more direct reports, the better.

VPN Blocked with iOS 27 + WatchOS 27

When running iOS 27 developer and using an Apple Watch, also updated to WatchOS 27, Dscout detects the watch connection as a VPN and blocks use of the Dscout app. There is no configured VPN as this is a change to how the Apple Watch connects to the iPhone in order to support advanced Siri with Apple Intelligence.

This has already been reported to Dscout’s development team. Sharing here for awareness if you are considering testing these updates— it will break Dscout. You can simply disable Bluetooth to continue using Dscout as normal.

AI and the ‘arrs

I have created a replica system that syncs via API with Sonarr, Radarr, NZBGet, Ombi, Tautulli, and Plex to maintain an up-to-date copy of all data. In turn, this has created a single API-capable endpoint that I connected to a ChatGPT app to discuss my media library and help find new media suggestions.

I’ve always taken a private approach to my media acquisitions, however with this now valuable connection, I’ve now given up some of that privacy with the setup. That leads to my two questions:

  1. How, if at all, are you implementing AI in your media system?
  2. Am I overthinking the risk / visibility to my backend applications?
