AP Biology MCQs

I’m currently taking AP Biology, and I’ve been really struggling with the MCQs. The weird thing is that I don’t think my problem is actually understanding the biology itself.

For example, with the unit we just finished, I understood all of the concepts. Everything made sense to me, I didn’t really have questions about the material, and I felt like I knew the information well enough. Studying and memorizing the concepts isn’t really my issue.
My problem is applying the concepts to the actual question.

When I get an MCQ, especially when there’s a long scenario, graph, experiment, or data set, I sometimes just don’t understand what the question is actually asking me to do. The answer choices also tend to be really similar, so I have trouble figuring out what specific concept the question is testing and how I’m supposed to approach it.

Time is also a huge issue for me. On our quizzes, we get 12 minutes for 10 questions, so a little over a minute per question. I don’t have enough time to sit there and slowly figure out what the question means. I feel like I need to immediately recognize what the question is asking and know how to approach it, and I just can’t do that yet.

It’s frustrating because I can study the material and feel like I know the entire unit, but then I get the MCQs and suddenly I’m like, “I have no idea what they want me to do with this information.”

Has anyone else struggled with this? How did you get better at AP Bio MCQs specifically? I’m not really looking for advice like “study the concepts more,” because I feel confident about the actual content. I’m more looking for strategies for understanding what an MCQ is asking, identifying what concept I need to use, eliminating similar answer choices, and getting faster at applying the information under time pressure.
