Vanish Pulse or Tempo for longer training runs + HM?
I've been running and racing in Merrell Vapor Gloves and more recently Xero HFS II. Now that my volume is going up again I feel I could benefit from more cushioning, especially for longer runs (combination of easy up to 2h, progression, and up to HM distance race). I'd still like something that has an anatomical foot shape, ideally light weight, and 0-4mm drop. I generally run on the forefoot but start midfoot striking when tired.
I see the Vanish Pulse has 0mm drop and no plate but is marketed more to faster runs and race day. The Vanish Tempo otoh is marketed as a training shoe, but has a plate? I'm a bit wary of training in a plated shoe as I'd rather prioritize less assistance in training, but open to changing my mind. Since the new Pulse and Tempo are the new fancy kids on the block I'm kind of more drawn to trying those than older Altra models.
My only experience with Altras has been a stint with the VC2s (for racing), which kind of sucked as they felt so speedy and fun but just did not fit me well after multiple attempts (heel tab and foot numbness issues) - I did not trust myself to run a full HM in them. So going from more minimalist shoes for training I'm not really sure how to think about the current lineup if I want something that feels natural but has just a little more cushion.
Would you suggest the Pulse or the Tempo to try out for these longer training runs (and likely on race day too, until I'm ready to try another plated racer?) Thanks!
