Three weeks of Gobble: a review
Hi all,
Recently, we decided to try Gobble after reading some positive reviews about it. It was more expensive than the other meal kit services but the menu choices looked great and we love cooking without spending hours on dinner.
Week 1 of Gobble was overall really great. The delivery was fine and all the ingredients were packed well and high quality. The dishes were good to great. Their spice levels were a bit understated ("mild" nearly kept us from finishing a dish) and we usually enjoy moderately spicy food. The cook times in the recipes were all over the place and we often just had to rely on our own knowledge and best guesses to finish the cook.
Week 2 was sadly disappointing. The carrier was switched to OnTrac and the box arrived late in the day and damaged. The fish packaging was torn open and leaking and some of the produce was smashed. We were given a credit, but the dishes themselves were lackluster in flavor and sometimes confusing in concept. But we stuck it out and tried another week.
Week 3 (current and last week). Box arrived *very* late in the day. The steak packaging was torn open with blood leaking all over the box. The fish was not leaking but had been pretty smashed and as a result, was very soft. We ordered one premium dish to try, which was amazing but so far the other normal dish was probably a 3/5 - not offensive but once again a confusing concept.
This time I requested for a refund, not a credit, which Gobble honored right away. I also canceled the subscription and we have switched to Home Chef to try. The dishes at Home Chef aren't the most chefy, but they seem fine for weeknight dinners and are a bit cheaper.
I hope this review helps some of those who are on the fence about Gobble. We haven't ruled out the occasional Gobble box when the menus are good, but it is just too expensive to have these kinds of issues.
