Super top-secret features of the Shimano Manuals page...

I can usually find what I'm looking for on the manuals page, but I never feel like I really know what I'm doing. Today I noticed a few things:

  1. The "Quick guide" is a must read. There are lots of not so obvious features like "bookmarks", "sort", "updated", "show tags on/off", "pdf only", "exact search in quotes".

  2. There's a repair manual called "General Operations" at the top. It's neither super detailed nor approachable. I'm just pointing out that it's there, because I always ignored it.

Maybe everyone knows about these, but I didn't.

"On your left" doesn't work.

What usually happens is that people move left into your path and turn around.

I use "Behind you". It's simpler and people tend to move away from your voice.

I think the "on your left" thing got started in urban areas where pedestrians get used to it. Everywhere else it just confuses them. They don't know there is a "script" to follow, they just hear some random guy behind them saying "left" - so they go left.

Who makes keyboards where the right edge of the [Alt] lines up with the right edge of the [X] key?

Quality mechanical or scissor. I had a Keychron with the usual offset arrangement and I was always missing my shortcuts - even after months of use. 🤦‍♂️ I see some Mac oriented keyboards have it, but I prefer ctr/alt and a windows key if I can get it. It seems like most of the keyboards like this are cheap for some reason...

Cool site about tire sizes in French

I usually use Sheldon, but I found this which lists more sizes and has some cool tools. It lacks Sheldon's witty commentary, but could be useful, especially when searching for odd sizes.

A crib sheet: https://guidevelo.fr/blog/tableau-pneus.html You can also search. When you click on a size it gives you a page with available models in that size.

I have no affiliation, just found it searching for "550a pneus".

Question for old hats about diet.

Can someone comment about cyclist's diets now vs. the 1980s, or at least before 2000-2010?

If you compare cyclists back in the day they looked different. It's not just the kit or overall body fat. Riders had more muscle and looked older. They were just bigger. It's hard to imagine someone with Hinault's build ever winning a tour today, but he crushed everyone.

I know everything is more extreme now, there's better training, gearing is different, and I don't want to discuss what drugs people are/aren't dong. I'm just interested in diet, because it must have been a significant factor.

I'm thinking about getting 48 mm Compass extralight tires. I'm not sure how thin the casings are.

No thorns, but there are some sharp rocks. Some of the gravel here is rough exposed reef rock. The levee in the first picture is super smooth, but to get there you have to go over rougher service roads similar to the second picture. The picture doesn't really show the difference. Most of my everyday riding is rough pavement, so I want low rolling resistance.

The bike is my old one.
