New classic Deathrun port is live: deathrun_poker_final5

Our newest classic Deathrun port is live: deathrun_poker_final5.bsp is now playable in Deathrun Classic (Beta) on s&box!

Deathrun Classic is a faithful Source-style Deathrun gamemode focused on classic trap gameplay, Source engine movement, and community / ported maps.

We just added another ported map to the multi-player rotation, with new content coming every week . Currently we have:

  • Faithfully recreated Source-era Deathrun gameplay
  • Source-style movement
  • Configurable bhop settings, including disabling or speed-limiting bhop
  • Single player time trial mode where you race to the end as traps activate around you
    • Race to get your best time or practice traps!
  • Multiplayer map rotation with 2 ported and 1 original map
  • More features added every week!

[WR] deathrun_iceworld_v2fix - 0:57.71 - Time Trial

Deathrun Classic (Beta v1.2): Time Trials Update

You can now play Deathrun solo while waiting for other players to join!

We added a new Time Trials mode, you spawn as a runner and race through the map as fast as possible while traps automatically activate around you

Each map has its own hand-tuned trap timings, so deathrun_iceworld_v2fix and deathrun_sbox_cloudland_beta are both playable in this mode

Some traps run on a fixed cadence, while others trigger once you get close enough and activate after a random delay, making each run feel a little different

We also added checkpoints, so when you reach certain parts of the map, you can respawn there instead of starting completely over

Once more players join your game, it transitions gracefully to multiplayer after your next run. If people like this mode we can keep expanding it with a leaderboard and more features, but for now it's just an experiment while you wait!

Before / after look at our s&amp;box-native Deathrun map

Deathrun Classic Beta v1.1 is live!

This update is all about deathrun_sbox_cloudland_beta, our original s&box-native Deathrun map

We put together a before / after trailer showing how far Cloudland has come from the early greybox version to the current beta version

The main focus for v1.1 was rebuilding the map around the new movement from the last beta update. That meant rescaling parts of the layout, reworking textures, improving readability, and making the map feel better with the new, more accurate Source-style movement and collision changes

Beta v1.1 includes:

  • Rescaled deathrun_sbox_cloudland_beta for the new movement
  • Major retexturing and visual polish on the beta map
  • Better map readability and flow
  • Fixed host visibility for imported animations
  • Client / host reliability improvements
  • Misc bug fixes and polish

Think of this as the base coat of paint with lots more details still to come. As before if you want to switch maps to play deathrun_iceworld_v2fix after 15 rounds a map vote will appear! More maps and polish to come!

Deathrun Classic (Beta) - Iceworld Update

Deathrun Classic Beta is live in s&box

This is our biggest update yet!

We now have our first ported map: deathrun_iceworld_v2fix , with more classic ports on the way!!

We also completely remodeled our original s&box-native map, dr_sbox_cloudland and removed the remaining greybox areas, so the game is finally starting to look a lot closer to how we originally imagined it

Major changes in this update:

  • Added deathrun_iceworld_v2fix, our first ported Deathrun map
  • Fully modeled / textured dr_sbox_cloudland, our s&box original map
  • Map voting between the original map and Iceworld
  • Complete movement rewrite for more reliable, Source-style movement
  • Collision improvements to make gameplay feel more consistent
  • New systems built to support ported & community maps going forward
  • Stability fixes and polish across the board

There is still a lot to improve, small bugs to fix, and tons more to add, keep an eye out for continued weekly updates!

Deathrun - Human After All Update (Alpha v0.3)

s&box Deathrun Alpha v0.3 is here, headlined by two big changes: you can now play with human player models, and hosts have much more control over bunny hopping.

This update gives hosts the tools to fully disable bhop or tune air-strafe settings in real time, making it much easier to dial in the exact movement feel and look for your lobby

What’s new:

  • New per-player Human-only Mode — render yourself and everyone else in-game as humans
  • Hosts can now completely disable bhop
  • Hosts can tune air-strafe constants in real time for testing and balancing
  • Movement tuning to restrict runners from bunny hopping too far ahead of Death
  • New trap: a platform that turns red and kills anyone still standing on it
  • New models, a visual preview of what’s to come!

Coming soon:

  • Complete graphical overhaul of the greybox map, made with deeper features of the s&box engine
  • Ported Source content, with more classic Deathrun maps!

Deathrun Alpha v0.2 - Iceworld Preview

Deathrun Alpha v0.2 is here, featuring the first version of our new dynamic ending system.

Previously, Deathrun only supported the classic Old School ending. Now, endings can be loaded from separate scenes into the active game world at runtime, giving us a more flexible foundation for future endings and varied gameplay.

This update adds the dr_iceworld_v2fix bhop ending also gives a first look at our Source-to-s&box porting work. For the first time, you can see imported Source Engine assets, geometry, and models running inside Deathrun, with functioning logic like teleporters, weapons, and breakable bhop platforms rebuilt in s&box.

This is only an ending for now, but it is a major first step toward a full porting pipeline for bringing classic Deathrun maps into s&box. More is coming soon, so stay tuned!

Gameplay Improvements

Alongside the new ending system, v0.2 includes several gameplay and balance updates:

  • Trap order has been adjusted for better pacing.
  • The hinge trap has been reworked to cover a larger area.
  • The exploding barrel trap has been moved later in the level to improve early-round balance.
  • The runner track has been tuned to give Death more room to catch up.
  • General stability improvements and bug fixes.

Movement Balance Updates

Movement defaults have been updated to improve runner-versus-Death balance:

  • Death now moves at 600u/s by default.
  • Death can hold Shift to walk at 300u/s, making buttons easier to press accurately.
  • Runners now move at 180u/s by default.
  • Runners can hold Shift to sprint at 210u/s.
  • Runner max speed is now capped at 525u/s, so bhopping runners can still build speed, but cannot fully outrun Death forever.

These changes are aimed at keeping movement skillful while making rounds feel more competitive and fair.

We are releasing updates every week, and Alpha v0.2 is another step toward a bigger, more polished Deathrun experience in s&box.

Deathrun Alpha v0.1 Update

Alpha v0.1 release notes:

7 total traps:

  • 50 / 50 trap: Death choses to break the left or right platform
  • Exploding barrels trap: explosion kills runners and affects their physics
  • Fire trap: Fire ignites an area and deals damage over time

4 new trap types in Alpha v0.1:

  • Crusher trap: Displacement based trap with time delays and tweening
  • Ball trap: Physics-based trap that releases a rolling ball that kills when colliding with players, optional initial velocity can be applied to tune the trap
  • Fan trap: Physics-based trap that pushes Runners off the map to their doom!
  • Sequenced hinge trap: Multiple independent platforms fall out from under runners in a smooth motion, dropping them to their death

NEW Movement menu!

  • Configure each team's run / sprint speed independently
  • Enable or disable bhopping and autohopping
  • Control gravity, air acceleration, and more to fully customize your game's movement feel
  • Max speed enforced to allow for bhopping movement feel without game-breaking speed

Minor updates:

  • Voice chat, your and others' s&box skins, basic dev models
  • Many bug fixes and general stability improvements

Deathrun Alpha Development: Fan Trap

Hi All! We are working on bringing the classic game mode Deathrun to Sandbox! We have just launched our alpha, try it with some friends!

We just started when the game released two weeks ago, so things are still very early alpha.

Alpha v0.0 features:

  • Fully working team & round systems
  • Source 1 movement recreation, including bhop, autohop, and air acceleration
  • 3 Traps:
    • 50 / 50 breaking platforms
    • Exploding Barrels
    • Fire Trap
  • Keep your eyes peeled for autotraps too!,
  • Old School ending: Runners kill Deaths with an SMG
