seattletimes.comInside the Failed Plan to put SROs at Garfield
How intergovernmental differences superseded community wants, and students were left carrying the bag.
By Rafael Brewer (that's me!) and Kian Naeemi.
Kian and I (mainly Kian) have been working on this piece since the fall. We've gathered dozens of interviews and spent hours writing and refining. It's a bit long (1,700 words) but I think it is worth the read.
Please let me know what you think, and have a great last week of school!

Update: SPS Pushes Back RTO Date to July 13
Hello all,
I hope your Memorial Day is going well!
On Tuesday, May 19, SPS sent out a memo to all employees announcing that they will delay the return to office mandate for all employees originally scheduled for Wednesday, July 1 to Monday, July 13.
From the release:
“This adjustment reflects the proximity of the holiday period, major events in the city related to the FIFA World Cup, and a change to the School Board’s regular meeting schedule. At this time, it is unclear how these factors may affect traffic, public transit, and parking in the area, and we want to provide a smoother and more predictable transition for staff.”
The school board change references moving the July regular meeting from the 1st to the 8th as there is a World Cup game on that date.
“This decision is not related to any one department, office, or individual request, but rather is intended to support an orderly and thoughtful return across the organization.
“All other expectations related to our return to full in‑person work remain the same. Departments and teams will continue to share more specific information about logistics and next steps in the coming weeks.”

Hello everyone,
Me again! Click here to read SPS Insider's latest article on the new cell phone policy! We raced to put out some content related to the new cell phone policies as fast as we could. Unfortunately, it looks like The Bulletin and the Seattle Times beat us too it. Oh well.
If you've read all their articles, you might be thinking "why should I read more words telling me the same thing?". It's a valid question!
Well, I am here to tell you we have some exclusive information in there that you won't want to skip.
A shortened version of this article is available as an Instagram post.
Thanks for reading and please share my blog if you like it and know of some people who might find value in it.
Sincerely,
Rafi
