Downloading icloud photos
What kind of shit is 8 MB/s apple?????
I am trying to download my photos of icloud as I recently brought a macbook pro 2011 for cheap and put a 1TB ssd in it. I am using the macbook for my ipods and ripping cds. However, I am also using it to bake up my photos off my iphone 11 as icloud has no space left… Backing the photos up from my phone worked no problem, but trying to get a copy of the ones on icloud is turning out to be a nightmare.
I sent a request to download my icloud photos data about a week ago and only just got the email saying its ready yesterday. Already why is it taking a week to send me a download link?? I then connected my macbook with an ethernet cable to the back of my router and started the download (Its only 36GB). Normally when downloading large files this way i get around 70-80 MB/s and it takes like 10 min to download a 60 GB file. But apple cant help them selves, it averages 8 MB/s with peaks of about 20. So I left it to download.
After several failed attempts, mac went to sleep, connection timed out, and so on. I decided to use my macbook air 2020. This laptop only has 20 GB free (any more storage costs as much as a car at this point) it also has no ports, so i connected a usb dongle and plugged in an sd card and a second dongle for usb a to ethernet. Logged into icloud, changed safari download location to the usb and left it for a couple hours. Yes it was downloading at the same speed as the 2012 macbook (sooo much innovation there apple!).
It downloaded, I unplugged it and took it to the macbook pro to move the photos onto it. Safari decides to auto extract files, i didnt notice. Safari decided to delete the I extracted version while it was extracting it. I am now left with a useless 36GB “.zip.download” file. Thanks apple!
