Dripper shapes

I’m curious what style drippers everyone uses? And why are wedge drippers still so prevalent? (Indeed, my local grocers stock only wedge-shaped filter paper.)

I remember when conical/spiral-shaped drippers were all the rage, but it wasn't until embarrassingly recently that I replaced my old wedge dripper (with a cloth dripper from Hario). I cannot get over how much this has improved my daily cup of joe. Now, every morning my coffee reminds me not to be so stubborn.

How do you pacify your cat during a storm?

Our indoor/outdoor TNR hates being indoors during a storm. As if being kept inside a shuddered house for full day wasn't stressful enough for him, the sounds of wind and rain against our roof are especially loud inside, and the louder it gets, the harder he tries to get out. He has a litter box, toys, and lots of hiding places, but it's impossible to escape the noise inside. I'm not sure if he wants to run away because he's scared or feels trapped, or if he just wants to pee/poo outside or be somewhere where he can see and feel the wind and rain. (He often loafs outside on the porch, buffeted by wind and rain during typical showers.) I think he feels safer in the concrete shed down the road that is half-open on one side, but obviously I'd rather he be inside with us when we have a major storm.

He's been with us nearly two years now and is usually extremely well-behaved. Drugs are not an option.

Encountering other cats on walks?

This is a question mostly for those of you who walk around the neighborhood with your cat. What do you do when you encounter another cat? I’m asking because our cat sometimes runs into a particular cat when he follows me. (I always try to avoid encounters, but sometimes. . . oops. Anyways, these two cats have clashing personalities, and it’s also possible that our cat is being protective of me.) Both times it has happened, I’ve scooped him up with one hand on the scruff of his neck so I don’t get inadvertently bit. He is fine once the other cat is out of sight, but it’s very scary and stressful for both of us.

Tips for viewing more clearly?

I saw my first two nudibranchs this summer, and I wondered if you all have any tips for better viewing. Both times I was wearing goggles, and one of those times the water was a mix of temperatures. I could only get a clear look at the first one by squinting and making a little viewing hole with my fingers. The other one was just impossible. Admittedly my underwater vision isn’t the best and they were swimming in pretty rough waves, but would it be easier with a snorkel mask In calmer water? They are so beautiful, and I want to see ask the details!

Can I reuse old screw holes for new ceiling fan?

(mods: Sorry if this if the wrong sub; please delete if so.)

I’m replacing a ceiling fan whose baseplate is fixed to an exposed, slightly rounded joist by two screws and some loose shims. The wiring goes through the joist, so the new baseplate must go in the same place. Can I safety reuse the old screw holes? Do I need to use different screws or fill the holes with toothpicks and glue or something first? Is it safer to drill new holes, and, while I’m at it, should I drill two additional holes for a total of four connection points? The new fan is 6kg with a 48 inch diameter. Please be kind; I’m a newbie. Thank you.

Weather-resistant scratch post?

I need an outdoor scratch post or similar to keep on our deck, which is shaded but exposed to rain. We had a natural log for a while, but it rotted out and our cat has reverted to scratching our aging wood work. Do you all have any suggestions? Preferably materials that dry out fast. Will wood glue and sisal/jute last more than a few months in wet humid conditions?

Volunteer okra help

Last fall, I finally transplanted a volunteer okra that had popped up two summers in a row in the middle of our yard, where it competed with tall weeds, bugs, and the strimmer, to my garden beds. I waited until I was certain the first fruit wasn’t going to grow longer than ~5 cm, and picked it. I expected it to be over-mature and stringy, but to my surprise it was not stingy at all. Rather, it had a nice tender crunch, but it tasted a bit green/wild (not quite bitter, definitely edible) and was mostly empty inside. Any ideas how I can encourage the coming fruits to be meatier or tastier? I haven’t grown okra before, and I have no idea what variety this is or if it might be a hybrid, but I’m fairly sure I should prune the plant more than I have been, and maybe once the rains let up more nutrients will be available to the roots.

Does your cat ever take you places on their “route”?

Where do they take you? Our cat often follows me around the yard and then asks if I can accompany him on his route. Unfortunately, I am too big to follow him through the brush, too clumsy to climb the river banks, too scared to encroach on the neighborhood tom, and too embarrassed to knock on our neighbor’s door and ask if I can come in for air conditioning, treats, and cuddles, but I am touched that he would include me if I could do these things.
