My first ever bloom!

My first ever bloom!

I’m very new to container gardening and this is my first time ever growing flowers from seed🥹 I’m a very proud mom.

How to compost in apartment?

I'd like to start doing some vegetable gardening on my terrace and are also looking for a solution to our food scraps.

Wife found a product called Paris Paris Cue which seems to promise some sort of end product that can be mixed in with the soil as a fertilizer.

It seems to be mostly a dehydrator, I assume there is some way to convert the dried small food scraps into fertilizer? No idea how though.

What is everyone's setup/solution? Most important is space and smell.

I finally found the habaneros!

Time to see if these will sprout and join my jalapeños, serranos, and poblanos.

My marigold update

The marigolds I grew from seed for the first time (White Gold Max) have grown this much already!
I planted them into two long planters and two slit pots of different sizes.
I hope they keep growing well before the rainy season starts.

Hydrangeas have started blooming again this year.

It feels like they’re blooming a little earlier than usual this year… Looks like it’s going to be a hot one.

Help me save my little balcony for the next weeks.

Hi there! Just found this sub!

here is my little balcony. As you can see from the dead and stressed plant, I'm really really bad at keeping plants.

I only recently found a decent balance of watering (Hydrangea on the foreground is recoverying after being in my care, one Ginko dead few weeks ago, the other seems doing fine, potato seems ok), but... I'll soon leave tokyo for several weeks leaving the plants to my wife care (If I'm bad a gardening, she totally ignores it. "it's your plant, you have to take care of them" kind of treatment).

So, I bought a Sonoff water valve that I can automatize. My long term plan is to put a humidity sensor that tells it when to water it. But for now, I have a trouble: the hydrangea really like water everyday, everyone else just every few days. and the heat is coming. (balcony is facing east, so it get really hot in the morning).

Any suggestion?

This was a concrete parking space when we moved in

Had them rip up the concrete and set to work creating a kind of cozy garden spot after we moved in (almost a decade ago now). Got some pushback from people questioning why we'd reduce the value of our home by eliminating a parking spot, which was depressing to hear. Kind of feel like we've got it about the way we want it now. Spring is my favorite month.

Insecticide for spraying around house....?

What do you all use, if anything, to spray around the foundation of your house in order to keep pests out of your home/garden?

I know this is a gardening forum, but we are moving into summer and we are starting to see bugs of all kinds come into our home. First time home owner here in Japan so wondering what you all do to keep the little guys at bay.

So far, in and around our home: stink bugs, spiders, one dead cockroach (that's our bad, ha), wolf spider.

I'm not on a mission to annihilate them...sort of...but just wondering how people keep critters out of the house as best as possible. Foundation sprays? Hire people?

Thanks!

"Grass" coverage for small backyard with pets?

Hello!

I was wondering if anyone had any insight on what would be a good ground cover for a small backyard in Tokyo? We have 2 dogs and there is turf back there right now, but honestly the turf is disgusting lol. We'd like something relatively low maintenance as its a small space and mowing would be very difficult to do regularly. (It's roughly a 1mx 8m area)

We were thinking something like kurapia or creeping thyme but I'm not sure how well that will do all year with dog traffic. We did clover in Canada and loved it, so we'd like something like that again.

The area gets morning sunlight and is mostly shaded for all of the day with very little sunlight in winter.

Am I screwed..?

As you can see in the pictures, I discovered what I think are Mealybugs on my indoor little tree. I’ve sprayed it with Benica and removed as many as I saw afterwards with alcoholic wipes, but I’d still like to know from the more experienced people in this reddit… will it survive and is there a high risk of this going to my (many) other indoor plants? 🥺

Tips and advice for beginner rooftop gardener?

It’s my first year gardening on my 4th floor rooftop and what started as two wooden planters in November turned into an array of plants and an obsession.

I dealt with an aphid infestation in one of my wooden planters around March of this year, which caused my cauliflower plants to bolt. I have since replaced them with a zucchini plant.

Any tips or advice to avoid aphids, grubs and other problems? Should I set my large planters on some bricks to elevate them? Do I need more marigolds? Do marigolds work?

So far I have: cabbage plants, sweet potato, beans, tomatoes, strawberries, various herbs, lavender, marigolds, zucchini, tomatoes, eggplant, kale, komatsuna, and peppers. (Some not pictured above)

**EDIT**
Thank you everyone for your suggestions! To summarize the main suggestions for anyone else in my shoes:

- fill pots and planters up with more soil
- figure out a way to provide shade
- move planters/pots away from wall
- a couple suggestions for pesticides were given

I'm excited to make these improvements and hope to share positive results! Already had a nice harvest of komatsuna, basil, kale, and other herbs and the taste was unmatched.
