What is happening to my tomatoes

Not even a week ago, I harvested some mini tomatoes but never noticed these poop-like cluster. When I checked this morning, there they were, even on my huge ones. Help

Our first ever watermelon

Wifey has been doing great work at the big garden. She planted this mini-watermelon and after an early beetle attack, she raised this little baby (Sugi pharmacy pamphlet for scale).

It tasted like ネギ, which is what happens when someone (not me) doesn't wash the knife after using it...! Again. But after that initial shock, it was pretty damned good. The kids demolished it.

Still have a couple more growing, too.

Traditional gardening calendar ?

I recently read a novel (半島へ by Inaba Mayumi) where the protagonist often refers to a "24 seasons calendar" (二十四節気) in order to do her gardening.

The calendar supposedly mentions when to plant flowers of all sorts, bulbs, crops, fruit trees, etc ; when to harvest those, and overall seems like a very complete and useful guide, while also showing traditional and poetic aspects of the passing of seasons in Japan.

I was wondering if any of you guys were using something similar ? Or maybe, would you happen to have recommendations about comprehensive gardening guides / calendars specific to Japan ?

Suggestions on what to sow now, for Autumn?

I'm a bit of a novice when it comes to gardening, but I also enjoy it.

I enjoy the experience more when I actually put the seeds in the soil and watch the entire process.

But, on the annuals (specifically for veggies and vine stuff) I think I'm putting the seeds in too late (my tomatoes and cucumbers are just now at the size that they probably sell at the store to grow lol).

Looking ahead to September/October, what's something I can sow now (and even keep it indoors) that could get ahead of the game come fall?

PS-I currently have beet and Brussels sprouts seeds (either of these good to sow now/soon?).

To mint or not to mint

I bought a mint plant because I thought it might be interesting. But I have no use for it and as I was told they are prolific. They grow like a mofo. I'm gonna toss the fkr.

But before I do, does anybody have any ideas how it can be used?

For the record folks, the son of a bitch is in a pot.

Anyone else having a rough tsuyu?

Looks like late blight, doesn't it?

It's a real shame, these were Cherokee purples that I was really excited for but I guess they couldn't handle all the rain we've gotten this month. I guess I understand why most commercial Japanese growers use greenhouses.

Anyways, if you have any green tomato recipes, let me know 😭😭

My First Hibiscus, My First Bloom!

Two months after my last update, my hibiscus has finally produced its first bloom!

It's the fastest-growing hibiscus I've ever had, and it has also produced the biggest flower I've ever grown.

It spent the winter in a 5-inch pot. After it started growing vigorously in spring, I quickly repotted it into a 7-inch pot. Before long, it was drying out so fast that I eventually moved it into a 10-inch pot.

It has completely taken over one corner of my balcony, but I'm looking forward to seeing a new flower open every morning for a while.

Wasps / Hornets flying around = how to protect?

So back in the states we would rarely get wasps/hornets in our area. When we did, jet sprayed them into oblivion…nest and all.

I have a small piece of lawn that I’d like to put a portable pool and BBQ grill on those rare nice weather days for the family. However, every now and then I see HUGE wasps or hornets (not sure what they are) flying around doing their business.

Fear unlocked: the little toddler and/or old grandma are out there having fun and BAM they get stung or swarmed on. We don’t see any nests around and they seem to come from one direction and leave another.

What do you all use to keep wasps/hornets/other flying death machines from an area that you are using outside? I just bought some sprays and coils (that you burn and they give off some kind of incense?). Would that be enough for a couple of hours out in the garden?

Or other ideas that you all have done or know about?

Thanks!

Basil Plants Being Felled Overnight ???

As the title says. Something is cutting through the main stem of my some of my basil plants. What is the culprit, i have planted in a raised-bed herb garden I made this year from cedar. They are being cleanly lopped at ground level. FWIW I'm in Tohoku.

My first 3 months growing on an allotment in Japan

I took some video when I first started my allotment, and some more on the solstice. It's so cool to see the contrast between the bare earth and my crops! Two days after June filming, I dug up my potatoes and did a big weeding session. My biggest mistake was transplanting sweetcorn instead of direct sowing and thinning smaller plants.

Not sure how much I'm going to be able to achieve through the summer as I'm in my second trimester of pregnancy so will struggle with the heat, but at the end of summer I'll plant some daikon and other winter crops.

Mini tomato marks

Harvested some mini tomatoes that are red already and I see these faint yellow concentric rings on most of them. Are they safe to eat? Third photo prob bug damage - not going to eat, but just want to know for sure what it is.

Advanced pepper care

If you look closely at the second picture, with the paprika in front and the shishitou in back, you will notice a small size difference... :-P

These were planted about 2 months apart. The system I was using for watering the seedlings worked great for my tomatoes & shishitou, but paprika prefer much drier and I think based on the yellowish leaves that I drowned the roots :-(

I took the water out of the tray & poked holes in the soil to help it dry out; I don't think the plants are too far gone & that Mother Nature should fix things.

I'm wondering, however, if I should try to do any trimming of the roots, or take any other measures?

TIA

Garden Harvest

Oh boy, I had a helluva day out in the garden harvesting all these and picking a couple bags of weeds.

Now the question is, what the heck am I gonna do with it all?! I can't keep up with how fast all my plants are producing! I've already given batches to two separate neighbors.

I'm not mad though. Looking forward forward to tomorrow lol. I wish my Tomatillos weren't struggling so much. Salsa verde sounds so good.

Kitchen garden count as gardening too?

The rainy season has started, so it’s been raining every day in Tokyo. On the bright side, I don’t have to water the garden, which is a big help. The plants seem to love the rain too — they’re growing like crazy.
This is today’s harvest: lots of leafy greens, some tiny eggplants, and nasturtium flowers
