Have you ever been able to put into words what that element is… the one that instantly brings out the best dancer in you? The peak you could reach… That thing a track needs in dance terms for you to instantly say: “this is exactly my kind of song (to dance to)”
The other day I was thinking about how we often rely on genres to define “what we like” yet not every song within those categories actually resonates with us (it’s actually impossible, you can like most but not every). It made me wonder if there’s a deeper element underneath it all, something more specific than genre itself, that truly connects with the way we experience music and dance.
There are genres that I’m regular at my everyday listening and the spaces I go out to dance in, yet sometimes songs from genres I barely even follow end up becoming some of my all time favorites.
It made me realize there’s probably something beyond what is called GROOVE. Of course groove it what makes people move, but among all the groovy tracks we enjoy, some unlock a completely different level of dancing in us.
I wondered what is that actual element? What is happening inside those tracks that pushes me to my peak when dancing? WITHOUT USING TECHNICAL WORDS.
For example… I just realized that the tracks that make me move the most are the ones that give me the feeling that something is “loading” “assembling pieces of a puzzle” “a machine turning on and charging” or “something being assembled”… songs with those specific feelings are the ones that provokes me to dance to the fullers. This is my way of describing what moves me in dance music at least when it comes to the kind of tracks that completely take over my body on the dancefloor. I think finding ways to describe these feelings can create a better understanding between people who really do love going out to dance.
I feel like if we do practice trying to describe that element or group of elements (in our own words) we’ll probably make much better decisions about the music we seek, the parties we attend, and even the DJs we choose to follow.
I hope I’m understood 😂
