Lightweight trailer for weekender?
Hey Folks. What lightweight trailer would you pick for a weekender-type, cargo camper build? Note: This will be pulled by an AWD Sienna van that has 3,500 lb. max payload.
We live in Colorado, so mountain roads and highways.
I will mostly store and haul family bikes. Plus a gear storage bench, small hang-out area, and maybe a fold-down sleeping arrangement.
Ideally it is insulated, yet lightweight / manageable for towing behind a hybrid minivan with a 3” lift and 2” hitch.
I am thinking single-axle, and all-aluminum frame (versus heavy steel). Maybe 5x10 or 6x10… 6x12 would be nice, but with a ramp that’s a long length for fitting into trail-heads. I am also thinking of electric brakes, one or two small windows, side door, back ramp door…. One trailer shop talked me out of torsion axle. They recommended spring axle.
Please see images. These are quotes for partially built-out EZ and ATC trailers. Includes windows, etc. They are surprisingly close in price. The ATC is probably nicer, better equipped, and better insulated. The EZ is more affordable, and still adds the DIY element.
I have sticker shock, but maybe one of these makes sense… versus starting with a naked trailer and chipping away at the build myself.
So, questions:
1.) What quality lightweight trailer would you buy as your main platform?
2.) Would you do a partial-build / full-build immediately from the trailer shop, or try to “save money” via DIY?
3.) What do you think of these EZ trailer and ATC trailer quotes? What would you change?
4.) Is there a lightweight cargo trailer that doesn’t look like I am auditioning for an overlander photoshoot, or for a job as a commercial contractor?
Otherwise I might go cheap, basic, and not overthink it. BIG THANKS.
