July 3rd traffic from IE

First time going to Big Bear for Independence Day. I already know it's going to be insanely busy and traffic will be horrendous and gridlocked the day of..

Does anyone have an idea of how bad it would be going up the mountain the night before? We were hoping to head out to our cabin after 6pm on Friday night.

Beachfront hotel or walk with kids?

As the title says, I've been looking at beach front resorts in Waikiki and have a few in mind, but my buddy says that there's a bunch of hotels across the street or within walking distance that are feasible and cheaper. While I'd normally do this with just my husband and I, I'm not so sure if I want to with my kids aged 5, 3, and 1.

Does anyone have any insight on the two? Pros and cons other than cost?

Best island and city for families with small kids!

Planning our 10 year anniversary trip with my husband and kids (5, 3, 1 y/o) This will be our first time together and we're hoping to find somewhere that has activities for the little ones, but allows for a lot of relaxation. I've read great things about Kauai for quiet and calm, but more family friendly activities on Oahu or Maui. We would like to visit more local eateries than touristy, and preferably near shopping/groceries for the kids or emergencies! We also have no problem with large cities since we're coming from the Los Angeles area. :)
