help a grad student get their health needs sorted out?

Hi everyone,

I'm an incoming grad student at Pratt for the fall. I've started looking at health insurance options/providers and wanted know what people recommend.

About me:

  • I'm pretty healthy
  • I would like to consult a therapist at least 1x a month
  • I'll likely need a psychiatrist
  • I get UTIs relatively frequently; historically, this has meant telehealth visits, running by the pharmacy for some antibiotics, sometimes dropping into a lab to do a urine test.
  • My income this next year will likely be under $25k
  • I'm moving to Brooklyn from out of state in August

I'm confident I qualify for NY state marketplace/ACA health insurance plans.

  1. I'd love to know - if you have ACA/NY marketplace health plans, Your favorite clinics/hospital systems in Brooklyn that provide competent and timely care?
  2. Favorite, reasonably priced acupuncturist? Willing to travel
  3. Your favorite therapist?

Thanks so much in advance!

HELP! health insurance guidance for a grad student

Hi everyone,

I'm an incoming MFA student for the fall. I've started looking at health insurance options and wanted know what people recommend for students living in Brooklyn.

I'm a US resident, so I'm not sure if this is helpful for international students.

About me:

  • I'm pretty healthy
  • I would like to consult a therapist at least 1x a month
  • I will have at least 1 reoccurring prescription
  • I will be at or below poverty line while I'm in school, income-wise
  • I'd love to be close to some kind of integrated hospital system, where I can run between different departments in the same building. But not essential

In your experience - was the Pratt-provided health insurance worth the cost? Was it convenient to get help in Brooklyn?

Or, did you qualify and get NY State insurance marketplace plans for low income individuals? If so, what plan did you have, and was it helpful?

More details about Pratt insurance:

  • ~$1300 for the fall, ~$1800 for the spring
  • $200 deductible
  • $6000 out of pocket max
  • has tier 1-3 drug list, and one of my prescriptions is likely not covered.

NY State marketplace plans:

  • Plans range from $10/mo - $500/mo
  • United, Wellcare, Ambetter, etc. I haven't delved deeper to look into each plan offering yet. I'd love to know what plan you got and what you thought of it.
