need to donate dry cat food - any recs?

hi! unfortunately, my cat unexpectedly passed away, and since she was almost 9, I have 2 big bags of senior food I need to donate. I’m in the process of adopting through Flatbush Cats and they don’t typically recommend dry food diets so I wanted to see if there was anywhere else that would take these off my hands. I’m located in Bed-Stuy near the C so preferably somewhere that’s easy for me to access or can come pick it up. Thank you in advance! 🩷

help a grad student get their health needs sorted out?

Hi everyone,

I'm an incoming grad student at Pratt for the fall. I've started looking at health insurance options/providers and wanted know what people recommend.

About me:

  • I'm pretty healthy
  • I would like to consult a therapist at least 1x a month
  • I'll likely need a psychiatrist
  • I get UTIs relatively frequently; historically, this has meant telehealth visits, running by the pharmacy for some antibiotics, sometimes dropping into a lab to do a urine test.
  • My income this next year will likely be under $25k
  • I'm moving to Brooklyn from out of state in August

I'm confident I qualify for NY state marketplace/ACA health insurance plans.

  1. I'd love to know - if you have ACA/NY marketplace health plans, Your favorite clinics/hospital systems in Brooklyn that provide competent and timely care?
  2. Favorite, reasonably priced acupuncturist? Willing to travel
  3. Your favorite therapist?

Thanks so much in advance!

Called 911 and no one answered is that normal?

I saw something really disturbing happening on my TikTok live of a girl in Coney Island, who was so drunk that she had no consent or awareness of what she and others were doing around her. Eventually, she ran towards the water with a random guy who was touching her while other men were recording her. From the live you can see when the two of them first interact with each other that's how I knew she didn't know him. This was on the boardwalk and there was no visual NYPD around so I called 911 and no one answered the phone. No operators just a robot saying to hold on while others are being helped. I was on hold for a long time yet no one ever answered the call. Eventually the girl left with the guy but I hope she's safe.

I'm helping a friend plan his 55th birthday - he wants a kind of a dive bar vibe in Brooklyn that also has food and outdoor space. Any recommendations?

Gas / electric manhole fire on Bergen and Atlantic

I passed when it had just started about 7:30pm. Called 911 but system was down today. Dark smoke then I ran when I saw blue flame and the fire department had arrived (I think someone else called them).

It was a few hundred feet from the gas station on the corner so I let the attendant know. Just curious if anyone else saw this / what happened? Was it a gas fire?

What's the deal with the Prospect Park peacock?

Recently, I was walking along Flatbush when I hear a drawn out caw and looked to see a peacock sitting on top of what I'm assuming is the gate to get into the Prospect Park Zoo. It was above the height of the surrounding fence, and it didn't look like there was any sort of netting, so I'm assuming the peacock could have freely gone anywhere.

When I looked up whether the zoo even has peacocks, I found a news article from 2020 about an incident when the peacock broke out and was wandering the streets. How has this happened on multiple occasions, and is the peacock not a flight risk?

June Hobby Guide: looking to fill some gaps...

I've gotten some great input from Bushwick redditors in the past, so please let me know if you have any hobby happenings (dj classes, mahjong workshops, pickleball clinics etc) coming up that I can include in next month's roundup!

I tend to only include experiences that will really help someone dive into a new hobby and gain enough skill/community to feel equipped to keep going, but you know of shorter experiences (less than 2 hours), I can still include those in the weekly emails.

Thanks in advance 😄

Ambient experimental soundbath show in NYC: Sat May 23

Hey yall!! I'm doing a show in Williamsburg called:

"The lungs still remember what the mouth never said"

This Saturday May 23, and I really wanted to share it with you all. Hope to give everyone a space to sit with their thoughts, let them consume you, until they finally quite down.

About the show:

https://ja.ra.co/events/2438865

In Tokyo, the city Zahra & Rocca started in, shrines exist in the middle of the biggest city in the world. You make the decision to pass through the gate and walk further and further in. You climb the stairs and press your hands together. You try to pray — but as you stand with your head hanging in a bow, the words don’t come to you. Fragments, images, everything you can’t seem to verbalize. You pray in pictures as your thoughts go haywire until something finally condenses. And then you walk back out.

Using field recordings they have personally gathered in New York, Tehran, and Tokyo, Zahra & Rocca build sound from memory.

Indeed, nostalgia is not a strategy. But you must understand the threads that have been pulled within you, so they cannot be pulled against you.

For some idea of the sound: https://www.instagram.com/reel/DYdnovoKBbY/?igsh=ejBsODY5a2x3cXA3

Hope to see you there if you can make it!!

Scam warning - Anyone considering visiting the Brooklyn Bridge and walking across, avoid the larger food truck [DUMBO] [Brooklyn Bridge]

Bought two larger water bottles for $13 (already a scam in itself), but got an email two days later from my bank asking if i intended to tip 74% ($10 extra). Obviously, I did not and contacted my bank who sorted it out, but just sucks. Wanted to possibly warn anyone who might be looking into the area.

•this was the larger food truck and not the stand that was there. Occurred 5/18.

How has the experience in Manhattan Beach been?

Apologies if this is the wrong place to be asking about the water in the beach because basically what I was looking for was to see if the tides there are calm enough to swim in.

Like what I mean is that there was an incident just recently in Riis Beach where someone drowned in the water as I was looking for a place in Brooklyn for a good swim, but I wanted to know more about Manhattan Beach regarding the water tides.

Are there any private clubs in Brooklyn that have swimming pools?

I'm not sure if this is a stupid question but I have young kids and would love to have access to a club with a pool we could bring them to regularly over the summer. If so, where do you go and what do you pay?

I know there are public options but the lines in my area are long which is hard with young kids. The pools are also freezing.

Woman attacking people Hoyt Schermerhorn

My buddy doesn’t have Reddit. Posting since the cops at the station didn’t do anything.

He was waiting for the train yesterday afternoon around 1pm and a Hispanic woman in her late 20s/30s punched him in the back of the head with an object in her hand. When he turned around he pushed her away and she was screaming nonsense in Spanish and scratched his arm up pretty bad with her fingernails. He fled the situation since she was obviously mentally unstable.

He stopped by the police booth and the response was annoyance by their candy crush being interrupted. They ridiculed because he said it was a woman that hit him. “You let a woman hit you?” was the quote.

He’s fine but just wants to put the word out there because whoever she goes after next might just end up on the tracks.

Has anyone ever seen a concert at Barclays, section 204 behind the stage?

Just wondering how the seat view is. I saw a few pics online but mostly of basketball games. I got cheap tickets for a concert and I’m just happy to be going but also wondering realistically how much I’ll be able to see.

Swapped iPads for scale models at our new community studio in Sunset Park.

Happy Tuesday, everyone,

So like many parents (and let's be honest, adults too), I’ve been actively fighting against relentless screen time. Back in 2020, my son and I swapped the iPads for plastic model kits armed with a manual, precision nippers, and loose parts.

Watching a kid go from initial boredom to 3 hours of uninterrupted, absolute focus was wild. No notifications, no algorithms. Just the satisfaction of building a 3D masterpiece with his own hands (check out the picture of what he finished!).

It completely changed how we connect, and it turned into a massive mission.

Next month, we are moving out of the apartment and officially opening up a boutique, 8-bench scale modeling, and STEAM lab right across from Bush Terminal in Sunset Park. Called Brooklyn Buildz.

I want to make sure we are building exactly what the local community actually wants for after-school, weekend, and summer programs.

I'd love to hear from the community:

  1. If you're a parent, what kind of hands-on, tactile activities have actually successfully pulled your kids away from screens?
  2. If you're a hobbyist/builder, what are the biggest roadblocks you face trying to build in a cramped NYC apartment? (Fumes? Space? Noise?)

Our Grand Opening is locked for June 12th & 13th, and we are running a 30-day Kickstarter starting next week to fund the pro-grade ventilation and workspace tools for the 8 stations.

If you want to see our layout, grab a private pre-launch link, or just talk shop about local summer programs, drop your thoughts below! I'll be hanging out in the comments to answer questions.
