A ton of toilet paper in the water at Coney Island yesterday

Did anyone else see this? It started rolling in around 4:30pm. I found out there was a bad sewage spill up river after searching online. The city closed some of the beaches in Queens and also one beach from further east but left Coney Island open for people to romp in sh*tty water. From what I could see it spanned several jetties.

The water quality at the NYC beaches is only tested weekly and was last tested Monday or Tuesday, giving no indication of how much fecal matter is in the water on the 4th of July. You would think a sewage spill up river would prompt more testing and they would close the beach with visible toilet paper !!!
I informed the life guard who seemed clueless and made a 311 complaint.

Is Brooklyn touristy like Manhattan?

I’m going to New York soon, and really want to see Brooklyn! I’ve never been. Are there cool spots/sights like there are in Manhattan? I’d love some recommendations for what to see, specifically in the Downtown/Brooklyn Heights area

There are bad drivers, and then there are drivers that ruin it for everyone.

This clown is not only illegally parked on a handicapped spot, he did it with such recklessness that he made it difficult for the family next spot over.

Where do you guys go in Brooklyn to get comics?

Just curious because I like to build up on my manga and USA comics collection as I live a bit near Mill Basin, and I was looking for some stores in Brooklyn where one could find indie comics that are not superhero based.

There drainage from the sprinklers at Kelley Park (midwood) is terrible. What can I do?

2 ish years ago they completely re made the park. It’s awesome. But they got something wrong with the elevation on the spray area.

Instead of going to the sprinkler area a pool of water runs maybe 100+ feet through the play area.

The water stays on 24/7 so there is water on these areas all the time. I’m sure it’s rotting the area under the play area.

It’s slippery with leaves and stuff.

I hate that they might need to close the park to fix it and if it is an elevation thing that’s going to mean pulling up the ground bc my kids love the park.

But this is terrible.

Also if anyone has been here they have these weird green square tiles for playing surface and it seems like each one has a different hardness too it these days. I assume someone is going to twist an ankle on them one day.

Please NYC: Just stop doing tickets lottery for the fireworks if you cannot control the crowd. Horrible experience at Brooklyn Bridge park.

Absolutely flabbergasted by the experience tonight. TLDR: lot of people, zero crowd control.

A friend of mine won the lottery ticket to access Brooklyn Bridge park for the fireworks tonight. Asked me to join and told me he and two other people were thinking of going to the Pier 2 around 6. Had other things to do today, so I said I would have been there around 8.

Got to Camden Plaza around 7:45, and there were people in line from the intersection with Clark St; okay fine. There were actually two lines, somebody was yelling ‘Zone B left, Zone A right’. After a while the line does not move. At a certain point everybody starts walking towards the park, till a complete standstill before the BQE bridge.

Then, NYPD starts sending people on Doughty Street saying that they are at capacity. Another NYPD officer starts sending people from Doughty Street on Elizabeth Place and then Old Fulton St going East, up to the point where people are stuck on the sidewalk and cannot move under a scaffolding.

Around 8:30 I was able to get to the a tent where nobody was checking the QR code. Ended up giving up completely when by 9pm I got to the security checkpoint and nobody was moving anymore.

City of New York: there is no point in doing lotteries if nobody is checking QR code after a certain time. Don’t say you can access the area ‘till 8:30 if it’s not true. Just leave it as free access as it has always been. And NYPD, if there are people pushing because they cannot move, yelling ‘just go there’ is not going to solve the situation.

I saw the worst of people only to get 2 inches ahead of somebody else. Okay, whatever.

Sorry, rant over. Happy 4th everybody.

EDIT: yes, I should have gotten there early. Yes I was venting. I hoped that since there were the tickets and everything else access control would have been better. Yes it’s on me. Thanks for all your comments.

Best spots in Brighton Beach for a visiting Russian expat?

My girlfriend grew up in Russia, and we're visiting NYC next week (currently live in SF). I think it would be interesting for her to see Brighton Beach, and I'm looking for ideas about which restaurants/bars/etc would be most interesting for a Russian who is otherwise unfamiliar with the area. Thank you!

Does Cobble Hill still celebrate Bastille Day (Sunday July, 12th)?

I remember heading to Smith Street about 15-16 years ago and seeing the celebration. Bunch of frenchman playing petant in the street covered in sand.

I'm searching to see if there will be a celebration in Cobble Hill this year and I'm coming up empty. Does anyone have the scoop?

Brooklyn Bridge Park July 4th - Macys Fireworks - 2026 Experience

Won the lottery in the past but this year’s experience was a sh*t show like no other. Ended up leaving around 8pm way after they held the line aka stopped scanning tickets. We were so close to the front but could not bear the wait w/o any updates. How did you enjoy the ticketed fireworks show at Brooklyn Bridge Park?

Is east Brooklyn really that bad

I’ve been going through the NYC DV shelter process for three years with a family of all girls all young. We finally got approved for an apartment so I decided to look at the area and look online and everything I’ve seen and heard about the area isn’t great. I just wanna know if it would be good for someone in my scenario I’m also worried my kid has ptsd and gun shots might give her a panic attack so I’m assuming it isn’t a great decision after that alone. If Off the c liberty ave.

Spot hero in Red Hook?

Driving in from LI next weekend going to Brooklyn Crab. Couldn’t find any spot hero spots - are the public parking lots right around it adequate? Thanks!

What are my chances of being able to show my little girl fireworks tonight?

Because I don't have my sh*t together I am once again making last minute plans but my little girl really wants to see proper fireworks tonight and for the first time I think is gonna be able to cope with the sensory overload of the whole thing (she has autism and in past years this has would've been impossible for fear of her having a panic attack).

So I'm thinking, wondering, what would happen if I were to take the R train to Clark St and just walk her to the Brooklyn Heights Promenade around 9:00. Is this something remotely feasible? I just want to arrive just as the show is about to start and leave shortly after.

This city can be so overwhelming not just for her but for me as well.

Storm Rolling Through Tonight

Tonight’s storm was absolutely insane. Craziest winds I’ve seen in a long time and reports are that they came through at 70-80 mph. I saw what looked to be a transformer explosion south around Red Hook. Curious if anyone has any updates.

Hope those tall ships in the bay fared OK!

coney island / aquarium cell & internet service

I know I know this one is going to sound very 'first world problems' to some. Any summer I've ever gone to visit the only beach area with out service is around Ocean Blvd stop. The entire day I was there yesterday the whole area and beach, boardwalk of Coney and Aquarium had absolutely no cell phone service. Any year out of the past 13 years I've gone it's been fine. I couldn't even send or receive text and had to walk out entirely passed the rides to the street. This seems wild considering what we all pay in taxes and rent and clearly there was a change. Anyone know what happened or was there work done in the area? Or Maybe part of development owner change? Really hinders the experience of a day there when you can't even communicate with others to meet or look up trains, ferries, restaurant info etc eg
