Google just dropped their official AI optimization guide and it's basically a graveyard for the "GEO hacks" everyone's been selling.

Dead on arrival:

• llms.txt files (they don't care)
• "Chunking" content into tiny pieces (unnecessary)
• Rewriting everything in "AI-friendly" language (doesn't help)
• Buying/manufacturing "mentions" across the web (spam filters catch this)
• Special AI markup or schemas (waste of time)

What actually works according to Google:

• The same SEO fundamentals we've always known
• Non-commodity content (stop writing "7 tips for X" garbage)
• Unique POV from actual experience
• Standard technical SEO (crawlability, page speed, semantic HTML)

The biggest surprise? They explicitly call out RAG and "query fan-out" as their core techniques. So if you understand how LLMs retrieve and synthesize information, you already know what to optimize for.

Anyone else relieved we don't need to learn a completely new discipline? Or frustrated you can't just game this with a new file format?
