Critical opinions are only allowed in private Discords, you absolute cretins

Narcissa Malfoy here with a message for the DramioneUncensored subreddit...

I am extremely disappointed in all the uncensored OPINIONS I've seen in this sub the last 2 days. I myself do not participate in this so-called community, but I became aware of these OPINIONS from somewhere else.

In that other place I do not wish to disclose, we have been talking about what a terrible sub this is and how everyone who posts here should be shunned from good society. It's not bashing when we do it though. Because it's private. I can tell you about it so that you will feel properly ashamed of yourselves, but you can't see what we said. That's what makes it acceptable.

This is what you mudbloods don't understand. Sharing your opinions out in the open where someone might accidentally find them because I sent them a link to your comment thread is rude and...dare I say it...déclassé.

All of the best people belong to private communities with like-minded individuals. They don't sully themselves by posting thoughts here on Reddit, unless it's to remind the unwashed masses (that's you) to mind their betters (that's me).

Thank you for your attention to this important matter.

In defense of Hermione's emotional intelligence

I just finished another Dramione fic where adult Hermione is brilliant at magic and 14 other subjects, but completely stupid about emotions—hers and everyone else's. And because I cannot help myself, I need to scream into the void.

  • Raw intelligence and emotional IQ are not a zero sum game. It is possible to be smart AND emotionally adept
  • The stereotype of the "rude genius" is not a fact, it's mythology that excuses the poor behavior of arrogant men who feel entitled to abuse the people around them
  • Hermione in canon is not some unemotional robot. The trio forms up because she's crying in the bathroom about Ron's rude remarks. Hermione FEELS things strongly, but Harry is not always observant enough to notice. She has a whole emotional life (Krum etc) that is completely invisible to him and therefore, the reader
  • Hermione in canon has multiple moments of keen emotional intelligence!
  • Exhibit 1: In Book 5, explaining why Cho Chang cried when she kissed Harry. Honestly, "you have the emotional range of a teaspoon" might be my favorite line of dialogue in all of canon
  • Exhibit 2: Telling Ginny she needed to move on from her crush on Harry. Clearly she delivered this advice in a way that was well-received, not bossy. And it worked!
  • Hermione also demonstrates care towards Hagrid, among others. "We should go visit Hagrid," etc. She's not wholly self-centered or oblivious to other people and their emotions.
  • Hermione in canon is also 1) a teenager without a fully developed frontal lobe and 2) exclusively seen by the reader in the company of teenage boys who have a total of four emotions between the both of them.
  • She was rude about Lavender's dead rabbit? Honestly, relatable.

Hermione is human and flawed in many ways, but I crave a smart, competent heroine who has more emotional range than "bossy," "I am right and you are wrong," and "angry."

Frankly, it reeks of JKR's internalized misogyny and I am sick, sick, sick of it.

I'm also tired of seeing Draco get a whole arc of character development with emotions and depth, while Hermione goes from "the know it all he hates" to...."the know it all he loves."

Thank you for coming to my TED talk.

The Secret Life of Capital - Draco is still one step ahead of the aurors, but for how much longer? Bank heist, BAMF Hermione, marriage law shenanigans, esoteric contemporary British art - Chapter 16 just posted

The Secret Life of Capital on AO3 (16/19 chapters, 71k)

The Thomas Crown Affair - but make it Dramione

This chapter was a big one and I'm so excited to finally share it! Hermione goes back to the Ministry to throw down with a member of the Wizengamot.

  • Draco is planning out his endgame as the aurors close in
  • Anthropology professor Hermione finally lets her swot flag fly
  • Like Jurassic Park...magic finds a way
  • Does it count as blackmail if someone really, really deserves it?

Reasons you might enjoy this fic:

  • Childfree DHr
  • The last 20% is gonna be TENSE, not a parade of wedding planning and Slytherin cocktail parties
  • Hermione isn't a scold prone to lecturing
  • Did I mention she has great hair and a new (magically extended) bag?
  • Still smarter than everyone else though and fucking ruthless
  • Draco is obsessed and enjoys the chase
  • We love a man who gets turned on by a challenge

How many Hogwarts students are there in your head canon?

This is research for my fic, I’m not just shit-stirring!

In canon, we only know 9(?) Gryffindors from Harry’s year, and even fewer students from other houses and years. Which leads one to the assumption that there are around 40 or 50 students in each year, or about 350-400 total students at Hogwarts. (I don’t know how many kids they packed into the Great Hall in the movies, but it wasn’t more than 400)

On the other hand, JKR claims there are 1000 students at Hogwarts, which would mean roughly 140-145 students in each year.

My sense is that most fans reject the 1000 number, especially because the movies don’t show that many students. It’s difficult to believe, but on the other hand…if you’re going to have a whole government and businesses and all the rest, you need the wizarding world to be larger than the folks visible in the books and movies. (THIS. This is what makes me want to embrace the larger number)

Does your head canon lean one way or the other? (Yes, the entire wizarding economy is wholly implausible when you run the numbers!)
