Tony B's plot is to show you that no matter how bad he wanted to be "straight" he ended up picking up his old habits. Remember when he found 12gs and gambled all but $400 away? The whole point is to show that these guys will never change. Same with Vito who couldn't even do a full day of work.

When Tony asks, "Don't you love me?", it is arguably the most raw and vulnerable moment in the entire series.
