OPERATOR | DX7 for VCV Rack

A few new modules from my SignalFunctionSet plugin dropped today. This patch features four instances of the new OPERATOR. OPERATOR is a recreation of the DX7 voice with support for loading multiple cartridges/ROMs, quickly enabling/disabling operators and a few more tricks. The enveloped voice is supplied but the VCA out, but the module also provides direct access to the raw audio at the AUDIO out and the envelop at ENV.

OPERATOR is not a full voice editor (Dexed is great for that), but is built for playability. It does give front-panel access to Brightness and Feedback.

OPERATOR doesn't ship with any of the original Yamaha patches. Instead the default voices include those shared by Brian Eno from the February 1987 issue of Keyboard Magazine.

The other major new module (not shown here) is called OP ENV which is a recreation of the DX7 envelope generator. The DX7 envelope has 8 different parameters (rather than the more common 4 ADSR stages) and you can do some cool stuff with them. Rather than creating envelopes from scratch, OP ENV lets you choose an envelope from an existing voice and modify each parameter. You can read more about how DX7 envelopes work and how OP ENV implements here.

This patch is sequenced by METAFUGUE (basically FUGUE and FUGUE XL merged so I can use them on the 4ms Metamodule) and includes CYCLE, which will be live in the next plugin update. A bit of filtering from Liquid Filter, Delay from 4ms Dual Looping Delay and Valley's Plateau Reverb.

Check 'em out and let me know what you think.

instant Remix with PHASE, METER and CYCLE

PHASE, METER and (the forthcoming) CYCLE from the SignalFunctionSet Plugin Plus nice Mutes and Drums from VCV Rack.

CYCLE is built to provide bar-synched LFOs which can be divided into long modulations sources. It has 4 linkable LFO outs with shape, phase and stability modulation.

PHASE is a dual looper with control over quite a number of things, but here I'm using the clock in and start/duration jacks to move through the sample in time with the clock. Because the area of the recording that is up for playback is changing, the pattern is fairly unpredictable.

Download PHASE and METER today, and hopefully CYCLE soon in the Library.

I released METER and NOTE in the SignalFunctionSet plugin a bit ago, and it has some unique concepts that aren't necessarily obvious, so I made a short-ish video walking through them. In particular I hope folks find the use of Bar triggers and pattern repeats for evolving compositions to be helpful.

MUSE and GRAVITY, coming soon to SignalFunctionSet

Two new modules coming soon to the SignalFunctionSet plugin.

MUSE is a VCV port of the Triadex Muse from the early 1970s. It is a shift-register-based sequencer that can be deterministic or semi-evolving. And you can chain them together for interesting results. Unlike the original, this one supports many scales, random and CV/Gate output (the original had a built-in square wave voice).

GRAVITY (shown as ‘SWING’ in this pre-release form) has three forms of chaotic CV and gate generation. The first is a two segment pendulum. Use ‘chaos’ and ‘speed’ to control the behavior and use ‘Gravity’ to alter the gravitational pull. There are 10 CV outputs. The universal set includes X/Y position, angle, distance from center. The screen is divided into 6 segments. Max CV from each is available (0 if the object is not in the segment) and gates are triggered when the object passes between segments.

Gravity Well mode casts your little spaceship to sail on the gravitational whims of a central star and a variable number of rotating moons. If the little guy feels stuck, fling him off in another direction. The gravity control determines the size of the central star.

Finally, Billiards lets you take a break from all the hard work of synthing for a relaxing game of pocket-free pool. The orange cue ball will do its thing, but you can also use a pool-sim style drag control to really get things moving. In this mode, Gravity acts as a tilt on the table, so all of the balls will tend towards that part of the table over time. That said, Billiards operates in a semi-Newtonian state of being, basically ignoring the first law when it comes to things slowing down.

I’ve got a few more ideas for GRAVITY, but will submit MUSE to the library soon. And while you’re waiting, check out SHIFT (not shown here), a CV sequence delay module.

How I build for VCV Rack

For anybody interested, I wrote up a brief piece on my approach to building VCV Rack plugins. I've been building for eight months or so and found a few efficiencies along the way. I'd love to hear other people's experiences, lessons learned and suggestions and well.

I’ve been making some videos capturing VCV performances, but the audio is getting messed up. When I use both Screen studio and OBS I get what sounds like slightly phased oversaturated audio. I could use the wav recorder in VCV and merge that in later, but it seems like there should be a simpler way (and my config in OBS could def be wrong).

I see lots of clean sounding videos here, so wondering what your pathway is for this. All suggestions appreciated!

Hi folks, happy to share a big expansion of my VCV Rack plugin Signal Function Set. 9 new modules covering everything from a two channel looper to a three module sequencing system and several new voices based upon some older synthesis techniques.

The video above shows the three sequencer modules controlling TINE and INTONE as the only voices.

Here's the breakdown:

  • Three are the basis of a modular sequencing system - METER for musical clock, BEAT for gate sequencing and NOTE for monophonic sequencing. BEAT and NOTE have shareable root and scale so you can alter both with CV and cascade changes through. All three use a common 'Bar' signal which is used to advance pattern playback on BEAT and NOTE, which each have 8 pattern slots with up to 8 pattern repeats each. The idea with this one is to create varying compositions that shift over time.
  • PHASE is a clockable dual sample-based looper with control over phase drift, playback speed and more. Two modes: you can recreate classic tape techniques by adjusting the playback speed or adding/subtracting short gaps at the repeat step. The second mode uses on-load analysis to create a map of transients and sending a clock in jumps playback to the next one. this creates either a crazy cacophony or some interesting rhythmic variation (or both!). Finally, you can adjust the sample playback window manually and with CV.
  • TINE is a pingable resonator based on the same original circuit as the NLC Tinkle, but with 1v/oct input
  • SWELL is a pingable CV Control. Each ping starts a new rise/fall cycle which is added to the current value rather than replacing it. This can work as an accumulator.
  • INTONE is a formant synth voice based on the Chant technique from the 1980s. Great for oohs and aahs as well as clicks and ticks with trigger input. Can be fed audio in as well as trigger/gate.
  • OVERTONE is an additive VCO where you can toggle on the overtones manually or with CV. Waveform shows you what is going on. Inspired by the recent Intro to Synthesis workshop I led where it was helpful to show how summing sine waves leads to other common shapes.
  • FUGUE XL is an expander to my earlier module that adds more per-lane controls, a dedicated button for sequence randomization, per gate trigger outs, min/max/mid outs and more.

Read all about them at https://signalfunctionset.com/tagged/vcv/ or download them from the library. I've submitted a Metamodule version as well, so they'll be in that library soon.
