How stable for normal PC use?

Sorry about the double posting

I'm considering getting a Steam Deck (with the dock) to use as a sort of all-in-one system. For Desktop use I don't need anything too intensive but one thing does worry me

>anything you install outside of flatpak (via pacman for instance) may be wiped with the next SteamOS update.

How likely is *may be?* Does this affect whatever normal things are on the system like written documents? Is it possible to disable updates?

Edit: I am familiar with Linux and I am comfortable with the terminal. Some of the programs I use have to be installed from their own repos so this is a big deal for me

What could v1 expansions have looked like?

If v1 did better, would it have received its own expansions? I've been wondering lately what the original iterations of Ishgard, Ala Mhigo, and Sharlayan would have been like. They all appear on the 1.0 world map but none of them were accessible. I remember YoshiP saying in one of the live letters in around 2021 that they were intended to be in v1. Would they have had their own expansions or content updates, or would the expansions be for further away regions like Doma? Would it have gone more like how XI does expansions where you can do them in any order?

The New/Old Sharlayan split wasn't a thing on the 1.0 map either - Sharlayan was where Idyllshire is now. Datamining shows plenty of unused classes which might have been planned for later content updates or expansions.

Why 1.x still exists isn't totally relevant. Maybe we got a classic server, maybe YoshiP decided to stick with the original spaghetti code instead of making 2.0, maybe Tanaka was just too stubborn to be replaced. I'm not saying that the continued v1 would be any better. It would probably still be a mess.

e: There are 17 unused disciplines in the 1.0 files. Two of them were intended for Limsa and have slots for Job upgrades. That leaves 13 disciplines that could have been given to other cities. You can see the list here
