Extracting Emotion from Instrumental Music

I’ve always been a bit jealous of people who can listen to music and describe it as a deeply emotional or evocative experience, especially with instrumental music.

Recently, I listened to loveless by MBV for the third or fourth time and went on RYM to read reviews. People talk about feeling specific emotions or the feeling of being transported to different spaces. To me, a lot of the tracks sound like the same droning tone repeated over and over, almost like a bleating goat on autotune (though a few tracks with more distinct melodies were pretty tolerable).

I had a similar experience with post-rock classics like Godspeed You! Black Emperor. It sounds like great instrumental music and I can see it fit in a movie due to the "atmosphere" their music has. But it doesn't evoke deep personal feelings or imagery for me.

But with a lot of my favorite albums which involve lyrics, I've never had this problem. For example, someone pointed out that the What Color is Love by Terry Callier really feels like you are the person in the album cover and living in that moment. The lyrics and the instrumentals work so well together to give that effect.

I’m not trying to hate on these albums, I actually really want to get loveless. (and the others in the similar style)

How do you actively listen to music where instruments takes priority over lyrics? What am I missing?

Non English Music from the perspective of an English speaker

We live in a globalized world where mainstream music discussion is almost isolated to the English language. When I was going to music lists by popular music journalistic platforms (Rolling Stone, but I feel it applies to anyone who makes popular lists) almost all the artists and albums mentioned are either from the US or UK. There is obviously a staggering amount of good music outside this sphere but is usually put under a singular tag like 'world music'. So I have started seeking out some artists and albums. As of now I have found two amazing albums

  • Trampa de Luz by Sasha Sokol: A synth-y and catchy, fun Mexican dance-pop record
  • World is Yours by MASS OF THE FERMENTING DREGS: An energetic Japanese indie rock record with beautiful vocals

Diving into these I ran into a major problem. Language.
For those who actively listen to non-English music, how do you usually approach it? Do you look up translations or do you simply go with the vibes?

More importantly, what is that one non-English album or artist that completely shattered the language barrier for you?

ThinkPad E16 Gen 3 - No Audio from 3.5mm Headphone Jack (Fedora)

Hi everyone,
I am experiencing an issue with the 3.5mm audio headphone jack on my Lenovo ThinkPad E16 Gen 3(Type Number 21SR005NGR) running Fedora.

The system UI recognizes when a headphone is plugged into the physical 3.5mm jack (the output profile switches correctly in the settings menu), but absolutely no sound comes out of the headphones. Internal speakers work perfectly fine.

To resolve this, I have already attempted a variety of standard Linux audio fixes with no success. I verified that the headphone channels were fully unmuted and turned up within alsamixer, cleared the PipeWire and WirePlumber state caches, and attempted to manually override the port pins using the hd-audio-jack-retask utility. Furthermore, I tried forcing the kernel to recognize the board layout by adding options snd-hda-intel model=lenovo to my modprobe configuration, and I disabled Windows Fast Startup to ensure the hardware wasn't being locked by a dual-boot setup. Despite the software UI correctly displaying the switch to the headphone profile when plugged in, the physical port remains completely silent.

cat /proc/asound/card*/codec* | grep Codec
Codec: Conexant SN6140
Codec: Intel Meteor Lake HDMI

When installing Fedora the test always failed with the errors
Job for checkisomd5@dev-sda.service failed because the control process exited with error code.
See "systemctl status checkisomd5@dev-sda.service" and "journalctl -xeu checkisomd5@dev-sda.service" for details.
