What is the general understanding of academia here?

What do people think of academia? I’m not really a fan of a materialistic lifestyle. I value intellectualism, even though I come from a very low-class background. But how do I stop interacting with people who don’t respect academia and what I do? Is this just the norm? People seriously believe opening a small business is worth more than pursuing higher education?
I guess I have to stop valuing their opinions so much and just focus on my work, but we all know that’s easier said than done. I understand money is absolutely a judging factor, but people here seem not to care about anything else.
One more thing, it is that with a prof paycheck, I know I am never buying an apartment and I’d barely survive. How can a country not provide their smartest people with basic needs?
