Bringing second hand furniture purchased in the US back to Canada?

Has anyone here ever purchased used furniture in the US and brought it back via the land crossing? Do you know if duties are charged on second hand goods? I'm refurnishing my place and found some great pieces of Washington, but I don't want to get slammed with duties on the way home so just double checking. Thanks!

Does anyone else feel like the uptick in films/TV about non-white people has already stalled?

I'm a mixed-race (Eurasian) actor, who speaks English and Chinese fluently. When I decided to pursue acting a few years ago, I was really excited because there seemed to be an influx of projects about people from mixed backgrounds, or projects that were looking for biracial/bilingual actors. A lot of professionals I met told me I had a great niche because of my look/heritage/language as the industry was becoming more diverse. But it seems like those projects are already kind of going to the wayside? Does anyone else feel like that's true? Diversity in big roles seemed to be up briefly and is now down again. Am I just being cynical or is this really the case?

Has anyone tried Ritual's new Iron supplement?

I just found out I'm severely anaemic which has inspired me to take multivitamins on top of supplementing iron.

I'm ordering some vitamins from Ritual and noticed they also carry a new Iron supplement, I'm curious if anyone has tried it and what they think? It has 60mg of iron, which seems pretty good considering other top rated brands have about 20-30mg. It seems to have a similar ingredients list to Thorne's Advanced Iron Complex, which is the other supplement I was thinking of taking.

Ferritin 4 ug/L - what do I do??

For the past little while I have been experiencing persistent headaches, blurred vision, hair loss and shortness of breath from small tasks like going up the stairs, and feeling exhausted, mentally foggy and irritable, I will cry multiple times a day and this is not the norm for me. I wear a Fitbit and my heart rate will jump if I do small things like fold a large blanket.

I live in Canada, I don't have a family doctor (as many here don't) and contacted a telehealth provider, because I was worried by tiredness was due to a recurrence of a c-diff infection I had last year. By chance the doctor tested my ferritin and it came back at my ferritin is at 4 ug/L. There are a few other abnormalities in my CBC that point towards iron deficiency anemia: low hemoglobin, low hematocrit, high red cell distribution width. Needless to say I am really stressed out by this.

I take spironolactone for my acne, I suspect I have PCOS, though because of my lack of a GP, it's practically impossible to get a diagnosis. I've been having my period twice a month, and each time, it's quite severe. I also donate blood regularly, my hemoglobin was normal at my last donation so I didn't realise there was cause for concern. I went to urgent care about my periods in February and they referred me for a pelvic ultrasound, but I still have not been in for it.

I went to urgent care again today hoping to get a referral to a haematologist. It's almost impossible to get an appointment at our local urgent care and we don't have any other clinics in my area. Sadly they slotted me in to see a nurse practitioner rather than a physician, and she was very dismissive of me. She wouldn't provide a diagnosis and all she said was: try supplements and eating more iron rich foods. She said there was no need for iron infusions at this point but as far as I know from my research, my ferritin levels are critically low. It wasn't until I started crying that I'm worried about my very frequent, heavy periods, and the level of exhaustion I feel that she seemed to realise that I'm incredibly worried. The RN also said there was a chance my pelvic ultrasound referral had not been received, which stressed me out even further. I've been so depressed for the past few months and it now makes sense why.

I got a pharmacist to recommend a liquid iron supplement which I take with vitamin C, but what else should I do next? Should I try to see a physician and get a haematologist referral? Or should I just try to get an iron infusion through a private clinic or naturopathic provider? I'm so worried and tired, I barely leave the house because everything exhausts and depresses me. Any advice would be immensely helpful, thank you so much.

Fleas in the home - how do we eradicate them??

My cat unfortunately brought fleas into our house. He sleeps in my bed so I'm the one who has been getting bitten. He has had Bravecto to treat them but the issue is they're now in our environment. Does anyone have any tips on how to eradicate them without bringing in a fumigator? I've had my mattress steam cleaned, as well as the couch and had the carpets taken to be cleaned too. If anyone has successfully gotten rid of fleas sans fumigator, please let me know what you recommend!

What happened/is happening to my seedlings?

My peppers have been living in my mini Miracle Gro greenhouse, all in the same tray and they seemed really strong and healthy, then seemingly randomly a couple of them started to look a bit sad, I thought maybe they just needed some water or sunshine but they totally packed up within a couple days. The rest of the train is mostly fine, they look a bit sad too but show no sign of decline like the other three that were in the tray. They've been inside for the last few days so I can look over them. What happened? Is it possible for seedlings of this size to pack it up from damping-off?

How to get a dark brown on cellulose fibres?

I have been trying, to no avail, to achieve a dark brown on cotton. I first did a tannin bath with cutch at 15%, mordanted with aluminium acetate and then did a dyebath with black walnut at 100% weight of fabric, 1% iron and 15% sequoia. Sadly, the colour is still not rich enough. Has anyone successfully produced a colour like this and if so, how?! Thank you!!

Hi! So the title says it all, I'm trying to create a quilt for the first time that incorporates curves. I don't have a quilt block pattern for it and am using this image as inspiration.

I'm just trying to create a balanced block that can be printed and used as a cutting guide for a 12.5" x 12.5" block. The quilt will be a 4 by 4 format, with each block resembling the second image here. I would use the image itself but the thing is each piece (pink backing, brown over-curve, khaki under-curve) is not balanced and I'd like to get it as balanced as possible so that I don't want to rip my hair out with frustration from wonky/uneven pieces when it comes to piecing it.

I can't imagine it's a very complicated design to someone who is experienced. I've been attempting it, but as an Illustrator novice, have found it basically impossible to create a balanced block. Also finding it incredibly difficult freehand so I figured I'd ask here. Please shoot me a message if you're interested and I can send you the design. Thank you so much in advance!

I purchased a bunch of extra galvanised steel tomato cages (from Canadian Tire for any Canadian gardeners) today to support my squash and tomato plants. They were all quite inexpensive, and on the drive home, I got to wondering about the possibility of lead contamination. A few years ago I unknowingly bought a bunch of dishware that contained lead, so I got an at-home test kit and now try to err on the safe side. When I got home, I used my test kit on them, lo and behold they all were contaminated.

Just a PSA to be sure about the safety of metal bits that go into the soil! Lead soil contamination is practically impossible to eradicate and acidic veg like tomatoes really soak it up. Obviously most of us are growing veg for consumption so it's really important to stay safe ❤️

I decided to start my squash and melons indoors this year in soil blocks and taking them outside in the daytime because we've had great sunshine recently. In previous years, my yield has been low, I believe due to root disturbance during transplant from a plastic pot. I foolishly overlooked how quickly they grow in such optimal conditions and the roots are already coming out of the blocks, I initially had them placed close together and some have even grown into other blocks. When I went to pull them apart and space them out, some of the roots broke. My garden guru Linda Gilkeson recommends doing transplants in the PNW climate, even though I've heard that direct sowing is the best option for such delicate root systems.

I really want a good yield this year (I've become a bit of a helicopter plant parent), considering some of these roots are already damaged, should I just start over, heat up my soil outside with some plastic sheeting and direct sow?

I've been travelling recently and have started to get these insanely itchy marks on my lower abdomen, right above my hips, though I also have itches on other parts of my body like the meaty part of my tricep, fingers, back. They look like bites to me, does anyone have any insight?
