Swift X overheating. Repaste needed again?
Hey everyone,
I’m having some serious performance and thermal issues with my Acer Swift X (SFX14-41g) and could really use some advice.
My Specs:
- CPU: AMD Ryzen 7 5700U
- RAM: 16GB
- GPU 1: Nvidia GeForce GTX 1650 (4GB)
- GPU 2: AMD Radeon Graphics
- OS: Windows 11 (64-bit)
I bought this laptop back in 2019 for both personal and school/university use. I know this was a huge mistake on my part, but I never changed the thermal paste or did a deep clean until last year. I took it to a professional shop ( that i had good feedback) where they cleaned out all the dust, cleaned the fans, and replaced the thermal paste.
Right after that, it was running fine. Just a short while ago, I could play games like Valorant smoothly on low settings (something between ~100-150 fps).
Lately, the laptop has been acting up badly. Whenever I try to play games, my Nvidia GPU instantly hits 100% utilization and temperatures skyrocket to over 90°C. Because of this extreme thermal throttling, I am getting unplayable performance (barely reaching 10 FPS). Right now, the only game I can actually play without the laptop melting is Brawlhalla, just because it doesn't demand any real power.
I always updated my drivers, so I don't think that's the problem.
Since it has been less than a year since the professional repaste and cleaning, is it normal for the performance to drop this drastically so fast? Do I need to take it back to the shop to get the thermal paste replaced and cleaned again, or could this be a different issue (like a bad paste application by the shop)? To me, the fans seem to be working fine, and I always make sure the bottom of the PC isn't covered so the fans have good airflow.
