No Bootable Device error that fixes itself after 10 minutes

I have an Acer Aspire 7 R9F8 laptop with a 512gb Hynix NVMe. I recently had a black screen of death with "Memory Management" error. After booting up, it shows "No Bootable Device". I kept on shutting it down and booting again but the same error shows up. I let it sit (powered off) for 10minutes before trying again. This time the laptop booted up normally again. This has happened for like 5 times now in 3 months. What could be the cause? I'm suspecting it is a failing nvme but I'm not sure why it works again after waiting some time.

[HELP] Persistent nvlddmkm Event ID 153 crashes ONLY when external monitor connected via USB-C to DisplayPort — Acer Predator Helios Neo 16 RTX 4060 Laptop

This issue has been going on for several months and I've tried everything I can think of. Really desperate for help at this point.

Specs:

  • Model: Acer Predator Helios Neo 16 PHN16-71
  • CPU: Intel Core i7-13700HX (13th Gen, 2.10 GHz)
  • GPU: NVIDIA GeForce RTX 4060 Laptop GPU 8GB + Intel UHD Graphics 128MB
  • RAM: 16GB DDR5 (15.7GB usable)
  • Storage: 954GB NVMe SSD (560GB used / 394GB free)
  • OS: Windows 11 Home 64-bit
  • BIOS: v1.20 (latest)
  • Driver: 572.70 WHQL (also tested 591.59 — worse results)
  • MUX Switch: NVIDIA GPU only
  • External monitor: 2K (2560x1440) @ 180Hz, connected via USB-C to DisplayPort cable

Problem:

Getting persistent nvlddmkm Event ID 153 crashes (\Device\000000d5, Error on GPUID: 100) whenever external monitor is connected via USB-C to DisplayPort cable running at 2K 180Hz. This has been happening for several months now. Blackscreen lasts a few seconds then recovers by itself or with Ctrl+Win+Shift+B. Sometimes Event ID 14 (VRAM allocation failure) appears alongside it.

Crashes happen during light tasks like browsing, watching YouTube, and even in-game — Valorant has also triggered blackscreen with external monitor connected.

Most important observation: ZERO crashes ever when using laptop screen only. Played games, watched YouTube for hours, browsed with many tabs — completely stable without external monitor. The moment external monitor is connected via USB-C to DisplayPort at 2K 180Hz, crashes start happening even during the lightest tasks.

Also noticed the USB-C cable tip gets noticeably warm during use.

Everything already tried (nothing worked permanently):

  • DDU clean install multiple times — tested drivers 572.70, 591.59, and Acer OEM driver
  • Note: driver 572.70 significantly reduced blackscreen frequency at first, but crashes are still recurring
  • BIOS already on latest v1.20 (includes "Optimizes settings for NVIDIA GPU" fix from v1.16)
  • TDR Delay set to 8 in registry
  • Memory Integrity disabled
  • Thunderbolt controller power management disabled
  • Chrome hardware acceleration disabled
  • NVIDIA power management set to Prefer Maximum Performance
  • MUX Switch set to NVIDIA GPU only
  • Intel chipset drivers — no relevant updates found
  • SFC /scannow and DISM RestoreHealth — no issues found
  • Tested refresh rate at 60Hz, 144Hz, and 180Hz — crashes at ALL of them
  • Tested resolution at 1080p and 2K — crashes at both
  • Replaced USB-C to DP cable with brand new one — still crashes
  • Disabled NVIDIA HD Audio and NVIDIA Virtual Audio Device — no effect

Typical Event log pattern:
Multiple errors fire within 1 second:

  • Event ID 14: VRAM allocation error
  • Event ID 153: UCodeReset TDR occurred on GPUID:100
  • Event ID 153: Resetting TDR occurred on GPUID:100
  • Event ID 153: Reset TDR occurred on GPUID:100
  • Event ID 153: Restarting TDR occurred on GPUID:100

Current theory:
USB-C port on the laptop has a physical issue causing unstable DisplayPort Alt Mode signal under sustained use when driving 2K 180Hz, which triggers GPU driver crashes. Next step is testing with HDMI 2.1 cable directly into the HDMI port to confirm. If HDMI fixes it, the USB-C/Thunderbolt controller likely needs hardware inspection at service center.

Question: Has anyone experienced this exact pattern — crashes only with external monitor via USB-C to DP at 2K 180Hz, zero crashes without it — and found a fix after several months? Is this definitively a hardware issue with the USB-C/Thunderbolt controller requiring service center attention?

Acer is shit.

Do not buy any of their products, I'm warning you all.

I've been using they're laptop (aspire 5) for 4 years and the problem is that I got alot of lags and sometimes this thing "Hermes exe" and overheating it was very hot. It's like the inside of the laptop is melting, cannot even use it for school, also there's like weird beeping sound while I was using Google and the screen turn black and the mouse arrow is stuck in the middle, acer if your seeing this I hope you can improve your products more. (Sorry for bad English)

Screen glitch (Acer predator Helios 300)

Had a new lcd ribbon probably around 2 years ago, idk how and when this started but it started with small screen shakes then into this. I rarely move my laptop and open/close the lid since it’s in a fixed setup. How do I fix this?

Acer Control Centre for linux

I finally made my first proper open-source project.

After switching to Linux on my Acer laptop, I missed having Acer Control Center for things like RGB, performance controls and hardware monitoring.

So I decided to build my own.

It's called **Acer Control Center for Linux**.

Right now it has:

* Keyboard RGB controls

* Performance/power controls

* Hardware monitoring

* CPU/GPU information

* Temperature monitoring

* A simple GTK interface

It's still a work in progress and currently I'm mainly testing it on my own Acer laptop.

I'm planning to add more features and support for more Acer models as I continue working on it.

GitHub:

https://github.com/cyber-anshuman/acer-control-center-linux

tested on acer aspire 7 (model: A715-79G)

If you use an Acer laptop on Linux, I'd really appreciate any feedback or suggestions for features I should add.

“Attention Required” on SSD in predator sense and laptop don’t boot on first boot

I am getting attention required warning on predator sense in phn 16-72 , My SSD health is 99% and its working fine.

From the last 1 month my laptop don’t start on first boot(fans and rgb works) but after hard power off its boots on second try is it due to my ssd or some other issue, I have tried everything but my laptop only opens on second boot.
This is happening from last 1 month but after opening on second boot it works perfectly, I can play games without any lags and freeze.
Has anyone else faced this issue or help me to solve this problem.
Steps I have taken till now-
Bios updated to 1.18(latest)
Fast startup disabled
Changed RAM slots
Battery working fine
Drivers are all updated.

What charger to choose for power delivery on Acer Nitro 16 AN41

Title, i'm going to university this year and i can't go with the 330w powerbrick, it's too heavy and big. What should i choose as an alternative? I saw you can use power delivery usb c port (which port?) to charge it with a 100w charger. Thank you in advice for the help.

Installed W10 on PH16-73, absolutely flabbergasted! Triple battery life!

We all know that W10 is unsupported, right? Right?? Sure, TB5 will not work, but that is like the only thing.

I just spent 6 hours installing W10 on my Acer Predator PH16-73, the one with 275HX and splendid 5090. I was just curious, because I simply hate the dumb slowness of W11. I was also ready to buy Anker powerbanks to prolong my battery life or to return this laptop, because for some reason on W11 I was always getting at most one hour and the laptop was always hot.

Now, W10, I use Predator Control custom app instead of Predator Sense, I have some third party apps for RGB lights, but..

the battery life is literally 4-5 hours (instead of 1 hour!!!) and the CPU is damn cold, I manually turned off the fans almost to zero and it stays on 45 degrees even though I ma on reddit and google researching and writing this. What the.. how is this even possible. On W11 it was always hot and fans spinning.

Know that this laptop has no iGPU only mode in bios, so I thought this, bad battery life, was it.

One particularly interesting detail: when switching into gaming mode on W10, I can hear the Windows hardware connect/disconnect sound as the NVIDIA GPU seems to power on/off. The GPU still appears normally in Device Manager and Task Manager, so it isn’t being “removed”; it appears to be entering a much deeper power state when idle. I can’t conclusively prove it’s specifically D3cold yet, but the behavior strongly suggests much better dGPU power gating than I was getting on my W11 setup. Unbelievable!!!

Gemini and ChatGPT tried to summarize it for you, so here you go. Damn Microsoft and and everyone, it is such a scam these windows.

I am really gonna go for Linux, this was the last straw for me. The only negative thing I have to say about this laptop that 240Hz is unchangeable indeed.

I don’t think the explanation is simply “Windows 10 is more efficient than Windows 11.” I changed several variables at once: OS, driver stack, Acer software, and power/EC control. The most likely explanation is that the W10 setup is finally allowing the NVIDIA dGPU to properly enter a deep idle state, while also keeping CPU/background power much lower. The alternative Predator utility may be just as important as W10 itself. The Modern Standby issue is separate: putting the laptop into Modern Standby, closing the lid, and charging it from a USB-C power bank caused it to get extremely hot, so I’m avoiding registry hacks to disable Modern Standby. The big takeaway is that this particular W10 + driver + control-software combination behaves like a completely different machine in terms of idle power consumption, thermals, and battery life.

The most realistic technical explanation is that the W10 setup is managing the hardware’s idle states much better, rather than W10 simply being inherently more efficient. The biggest likely factor is NVIDIA Optimus/dGPU power management: your W10 + alternative control utility appears to let the discrete GPU enter a much deeper idle/power-gated state when it is not needed, while your previous W11 setup likely kept it in a higher-power state. The CPU also appears to spend more time in deeper idle states because of lower background activity and/or more aggressive power limits, reducing package power and heat. The different driver stack, Acer/EC control software, GPU switching mode, and power profiles can all contribute, so the dramatic battery improvement is probably the combined result of these changes rather than Windows 10 alone.

UPDATE: PreySense on W11 is a bit better, even somehow disabled dGPU, but the temperatures are still higher than on W10. I think it's due to higher HW requirements of W11 and its telemetry etc., yet it's definitely much better than stock Predator Sense. Of course.

Never buying another Acer

I've had my nitro17 for a few years now, loved it the entire time. Today I woke up to a secure boot fail because Acer pushed a firmware update (1.26) knowing it breaks the secure boot on Windows 11, causes boot loops, and other day-ruining problems.

I've spent half a day on this and still haven't been able to fix it. The only reason I have this laptop is for gaming. If I go back to Linux I only lose a couple games, but I will never buy another Acer product again even if I get this fixed.

They've known about it, they could fix it, they don't care.

Acer aspire heating issue

I recently bought an Acer Aspire 7 with an RTX 3050 and 16GB RAM.

While playing GTA V at 1080p High settings, I'm getting:

  • CPU: 95–98°C
  • GPU: 75–80°C

These temperatures are while plugged in and gaming normally.

Are these temperatures normal for the Aspire 7? Should I be concerned about the CPU reaching 98°C, or is this expected for a gaming laptop?

Any advice from other Aspire 7 owners would be appreciated.
