[Serious] When is pippi's birthday?
As osu!'s official mascot, I thought this answer would be easier to find, but I tried to do some digging, and I cannot find an answer for when pippi's official (canon) birthday is. I am starting to think she does not have an official birthday, but there may have been something I missed.
Some preliminary findings:
- pippi's entry in the Mascots wiki page does not mention her birthday. In fact, it is surprisingly barebones, but that's beside the point.
- Based on the original forum thread from 2008 where pippi was created, it seems like her canonical age is 15 (or at least, that's what they decided on back then). This is the first post mentioning her age, and a few other posts confirm it. There's no discussion of how or why they decided on her being 15, so it was probably something they decided in IRC chat. Regardless, there is no mention of her birthday.
- pippi was redesigned sometime around early 2014, but I can't find any information about that redesign or why it even happened, let alone whether anyone gave pippi a birthday while they were at it.
- The title of this reddit post says "she was born on 7/27/2006 I think," but this seems like a fake answer. 727 was not a thing until 2016, which is 8 years after 2008 when she was first designed. I also can't imagine why she would've been given 2006 as her birth year. Regardless, there is no proof or mention anywhere else about this being her birthday.
- This entry for pippi on MyWaifuList says her birthday is March 30, 2008. This also seems like a guess answer. March 30, 2008, is the date of when the original "hey guys let's brainstorm an osu mascot" forum post was created, but the actual post of pippi's existence was not until either April 24 (when awp posted an early concept design of pippi and gave her a name) or May 13 (when Sarumaru drew the (old) final pippi design based loosely on awp's idea). So claiming her birthday to be March 30, 2008, does not really check out, especially with no official source to back it up.
- This reddit post from r/Osana lists the birthday of every character in Yandere Simulator, where pippi appeared as an easter egg NPC. In that post, pippi's birthday is listed as May 24, 2008. This is close to, but not exactly, the day that Sarumaru posted their first drawing of pippi (May 13). In fact, the original 2008 forum thread does not have any posts on May 24 at all. The reddit thread listing the Yandere Simulator birthdays also does not have any sources for those birthdays, so there is once again no official source to back up this claim of May 24.
- This reddit post that was posted on May 1, 2026, claims that "pippi's birthday is coming up soon," but given my uncertainty about when her birthday is, it is hard to tell what date the post is referring to.
- I feel like a common assumption would be that her birthday is just the date of osu!'s first release, which would be either July 1 (2007, the date of the first version of osu!), or September 16 / 17 (2007, the date of osu!'s first public release). But this just feels like an assumption people would make because she does not seem to have a canon birthday.
I have not done much research beyond this, and I know there are many places I still have not checked (other old forum threads, maybe some news posts that give clues -- although the few searches I've made have not given me many leads in those areas). But as of right now, it really feels like pippi does not have a canonical birthday.
Also, I know that everything "canonical" about pippi is ultimately created by the community, so I'm not trying to take the stance of "well if it didn't come from peppy himself then it's not real!!" I'm just saying it seems like the community has not created an official birthday for pippi at all.
If someone actually did give pippi an official birthday way back when, it is clearly not documented anywhere. I would rather find the originally intended birthday and stick with that rather than make something up new and overwrite history, but if we end up concluding that she was never given a birthday, we could take this opportunity to give her one ourselves as a community.
If you decide to do some digging into this yourself, I would request you share your findings and discussion in this thread so it's all in one place.
