What is the Aegis?
I have been looking into what the aegis is for months now. And it seems to me everytime I hear about or look into it, it’s portrayed as something different. • a cloak made from the goatskin of the goat that nurses Zeus • a breastplate • a shield
The way I interpret it is that it is the goatskin cloak that later had Medusa’s gorgon head attached. It being a cloak makes it easy to wear across the body like it’s depicted in most art of Athena. It could be fastened to a shield and across a breastplate. I see in some art it’s made to be the shield or the breastplate but in the way i perceive it, it’s easier to see all three. In this form I imagine it also being waved to create the thunderous roar used to scare the enemy armies in war.
I just want to see what everyone’s thoughts were on this and if anyone has came to any other conclusions. Thank you!!!🏺🏛️
