A cure for N24 might be a long way off. What could research make easier in the meantime?

I've been thinking about this a lot lately. If researchers can't cure N24 yet, what are the things they could make easier in the meantime?

Maybe it's waking up feeling rested when trying to entrain. Maybe it's having less brain fog or fatigue. Or being able to wake up feeling immediately alert.

Manuel Spitschan, a researcher studying circadian rhythms, is currently asking people with N24 what they think future research and treatment should focus on.

I went through the survey, and there are some questions that are personally important to me:

>Have you found strategies that help manage or stabilize your sleep-wake pattern?
— Page 9

>What do you think is the most urgent or most detrimental problem with current diagnosis and care for Non-24…?
— Page 10

>Which outcomes matter most to you for future research and clinical care?
— Page 11

I think these are questions worth answering.

Some of us have found that no treatments have been helpful. Some of us experience non-restorative sleep when trying to entrain. And some of us regularly struggle with things like brain fog, or not feeling a drive to sleep, even when we’re tired and it’s past our biological bedtime.

This is a chance to tell researchers what we really want them to work on. Our participation could help shape what research gets funded:

>The results of this survey may be used for future research funding applications related to Non-24

If you have the time, I highly recommend filling out the survey. If you’re in a hurry or don’t like filling out surveys, you can skip any questions you don’t want to answer and focus on the ones that matter most to you.

Imagine researchers could solve one aspect of DSPD before a cure is found. What would you want them to solve first?

Some examples that come to mind:

>Being able to nap more easily (for example, to recover from built-up sleep debt)

>Less fatigue or brain fog during

>Being able to adjust to dramatic time zone shifts more easily (less severe jet lag when work, school, or parenting obligations signficantly disrupt your sleep)

>Being able to fall asleep more easily when going to bed

>Being able to stay asleep through the night

>Waking up feeling immediately alert, without severe sleep inertia

>Feeling a stronger drive to sleep when it’s time for bed

I'm asking about symptoms rather than social challenges (such as stigma, work, or relationships).

I'm curious what changes would have the biggest impact on your quality of life, and what matters most to you personally.

Hope everyone has a good week and plenty of restful sleep.

Which visual style would you prefer for future N24 survey graphics?

A little background: In 2024, I surveyed people from r/DSPD and r/N24. Soon, I'll be posting the DSPD results on r/dataisbeautiful, which I'm really excited about.

Recently, I've been thinking about different ways to share r/N24's survey results so that people who have never heard of N24 can understand our non-24-hour experience.

I'm excited about some of the ideas I've come up with, and now I'm thinking about the visual style. should I continue with the same visual style as the r/DSPD graphics (you can see examples on r/sleepwake), or explore something different?

So I put together two slides that have a different feel. Which visual style would you like to see more of: slide 1 or slide 2?

I'm also thinking about how these graphics will be shared. Some of you may want to show the survey results to loved ones and say, "look at how many people are experiencing the same thing."

Slide 1 might work well with family members, whereas style 2 would be more personally appealing to some. Which direction do you lean toward?

The data visualizations in the top left are DSPD Sleep Wake survey graphics that I’ll be posting soon (the dark mode version is just a quick mockup and doesn’t represent a finalized look).

I'm experimenting with a more stylized look for the upcoming N24 survey results and wanted to get a sense of what the community enjoys. Below is the same DSPD survey graphics in two different styles. Which direction would you prefer for future survey graphics? Vote in the comment section.

I hope your week is going well.

Poll: For those with N24 who are currently free-running, how strongly do you relate to this statement? "Even though my sleep schedule free-runs, I often feel more alert during the environmental evening/night and often feel more sleepier during the environmental morning/afternoon."

Hello guys, if you're not seeing the poll, try switching to new Reddit.

I was surprised that 78% of respondents don't nap. I expected the number to be much lower.

This was an unexpected result. Why do most respondents not nap? For those who don't, why not?

Thought experiment: Imagine researchers could solve one aspect of N24 before a cure is found. What would you want them to solve first, and why?

Some examples that come to mind:

>Being able to nap more easily (for example, to recover from built-up sleep debt)

>Less fatigue or brain fog during the day

>Being able to adjust to dramatic time zone shifts more easily (less severe jet lag when life disrupts your sleep schedule)

>Being able to fall asleep more easily when going to bed

>Being able to stay asleep through the night

>Waking up feeling immediately alert, without severe sleep inertia

>Feeling a stronger, more natural drive to sleep when it’s time for bed

I'm asking about symptoms or biological effects rather than social challenges (such as stigma, work, or relationships).

I'm curious what changes would have the biggest impact on your quality of life, and what matters most to you personally.

What are signs you have N24 if you can't free-run because of work or school?

I'm going to crosspost this to r/sleepwake. Someone who has been searching for answers about their sleep may see this post and finally understand what could be behind their symptoms.

Hi guys, do you think this survey question is missing any answer options?

If you've experienced something that's not listed, let me know in the comments. I'd like to include as many experiences as possible before I launch the survey.

Thanks for taking a look.
