What determines Vanguard's ETF registration countries in Europe?
I came across Vanguard's Registered country information and did some analysis of the countries where it registers its funds and ETFs, considering whether each country is a member of the EU and/or the Eurozone.
Registered in the following countries (21):
- Austria
- Denmark
- Finland
- France
- Germany
- Guernsey
- Iceland
- Ireland
- Isle of Man
- Italy
- Jersey
- Liechtenstein
- Luxembourg
- Netherlands
- Norway
- Poland
- Portugal
- Spain
- Sweden
- Switzerland
- United Kingdom
Of the above registered countries, the following are not members of the EU (8):
- Guernsey
- Iceland
- Isle of Man
- Jersey
- Liechtenstein
- Norway
- Switzerland
- United Kingdom
The following EU members, but not Eurozone members, are registered (3):
- Denmark
- Poland
- Sweden
The following Eurozone members are registered (10):
- Austria
- Finland
- France
- Germany
- Ireland
- Italy
- Luxembourg
- Netherlands
- Portugal
- Spain
Not registered
The following EU members, but not Eurozone members, are NOT registered (3):
- Czech Republic
- Hungary
- Romania
The following Eurozone members are NOT registered (11):
- Belgium
- Bulgaria
- Croatia
- Cyprus
- Estonia
- Greece
- Latvia
- Lithuania
- Malta
- Slovakia
- Slovenia
My comments
- Belgium not getting registered was surprising, as it's a part of Eurozone, home to many EU institutions and a strong economy. Anyone might know why?
- Greece (my home country) is also not registered, but I recently noticed that all Vanguard ETFs have been added to the Hellenic Capital Market Commission list of EU UCITS Marketed in Greece. Also all their ETF KIDs got translated into Greek. So, could this be considered a form of registration?
By what criteria do you think Vanguard prioritizes the countries in which it registers its funds and ETFs?
