hi everyone. feels scary to post on here, but i need guidance. have any of you experienced this and should i contact a lawyer? (i do not have experience with this or money to throw around so i wanted to ask here first)
Background: I'm 28 and was diagnosed with
PCOS at age 18. l've had my random pelvic pain, heavy bleeding, clotting, and torturous periods dismissed as a PCOS symptom with no known solution by every single doctor i've seen. I have been told verbatim "you just have to get used to it"
Since April 2025, I've struggled with increasingly awful pelvic and piriformis pain. I went through a 6 month stretch where i physically couldnt sit. this obviously impacted my entire life, my work, my mental health. After being tossed around from rheumatologist to PT, I was sent to an orthopedist who in Jan 2026 misdiagnosed me with a bladder tumor (yup). As insane as that was, it landed me in the lap of an amazing urogynecologist who suggested that all of these problems might be endo and pelvic based. so i was happy to finally feel like i was getting somewhere.
I was referred to a fibroid and endometriois surgeon who did mri testing and confirmed a 5cm fibroid as well as potential deep endo on my ligaments. After a few months of pelvic PT since the front pelvic (ovarian) pain wasnt subsiding we decided exploratory surgery and fibroid removal would be a good option.
Surgery: I felt like i was in good hands, i trust my surgeon very much, im in NYC, shes with NYU and at the top of her field.
After surgery they removed the fibroid, tested tissue, and found a sizeable surprise cyst on my left ovary-- but no sign of endo (yay! i thought)
Unfortunately, the pathology from the left ovary was compromised... "okay, i'll let that go" because I figured "at least we have photos to give it a second look and diagnose it". She said she couldn't rule out endo even though she didnt see it and shes not sure why my MRI looked the way it did.
Fast forward to yesterday...
I go into her office for my post-op and she realizes there are no images in my account. Turns out, the photos from the surgery are gone. All she has to go off of was the initial surgical notes and memory. So i have no conclusive account of what the cyst was besides her opinion which is that it was full of blood so it must be hemorrhagic.
Like I said, i do trust her, however I'm sure you ALL know how difficult endometriosis is to diagnose and how important second opinions are. Now l've been cut open, put through tremendous pain, and am left without anything except a few notes and a botched pathology sample.
I'm heartbroken. I don't even know what to do or say. I now have no clear diagnosis, cannot get a second opinion, and have no medical imaging records for my future providers.
After calling the office with no response the nurse sent me this message to confirm the photos are gone. See the image attached. I don't even have the option for my doctor to LOOK AT my surgery rather than go based on memory.
I feel so lost and I know this is just reddit, but I needed to ask someone if this has happened to them or if they know whether I have grounds to sue. Please please help if you have advice or knowledge, I cant even describe how I'm feeling right now.
