Hey everyone, I recently finished reading this book. It's a wonderful collection of short stories by the Hindi author, Ajay Navaria (translated by Laura Brueck). Each story features an urban Dalit protagonist, giving us a glimpse into their everyday lives, careers, education, family conflicts, personal struggles, and moments of joy, celebration, and retaliation. What I liked the most about these stories is that, unlike other popular stories centred on Dalits, they do not reduce our lives to suffering, stereotypical jobs, or impoverished living conditions. Instead, Navaria portrays Dalit characters as educated and empowered individuals navigating the complexities of modern urban everyday life.

Another thing that sets this book apart is its deeply nuanced portrayal of characters. No character (whether Dalit or Savarna) is presented as entirely good or bad. They are all flawed and layered, which makes them feel more human, and the stories more realistic.

My favorite story was "Scream", which follows a young Dalit man who escapes an oppressive life in his village and moves to the city where he finds work as a gigolo while simultaneously pursuing his education.
