How do you survive a job when you’re completely checked out, but can’t leave yet?
I’ve been looking for a new job for about a year now. At this point, I feel completely burned out and mentally checked out of my current job.
The hardest part is that I’m still expected to function normally at work, but I’m finding it increasingly difficult to care, concentrate, or even get myself to do basic tasks. I know I need to keep working because I can’t just quit without having something else lined up, but I’m struggling to maintain the level of performance I used to have.
I’m not necessarily looking for advice on how to find a new job, I’m more interested in hearing from people who have been in this situation.
How did you survive day-to-day when you were completely done with your job but still had to stay? Did you lower your expectations of yourself, do the bare minimum, find ways to mentally detach, or approach work differently?
At this point, I’d really appreciate practical advice on how to get through this period without completely falling apart or sabotaging my current job while I keep looking.
