ladies? your dresses????
so i am a first-time viewer of GA, but not first-time fellowes (i fell in love with DA like so many). i LOVE gilded age!!!! the performances, costumery, score, character developments are SPECTACULAR. and so emotionally moving. i have to sincerely commend especially spector, nixon, coon and baranski.
i'm currently just at the end of season 1 and... these ladies (ada, marian, agnes [on the arm of bannister]) are crossing that dirty, bare dirt street with their luxurious/expensive eveningwear on the way to gladys's debut ball?? aren't they thinking of the dirt trail the gowns/hems will leave as soon as they enter the russell manor? ...or did they have menservants who cleaned the dresses and shoes before all guests entered [that we don't see]?
logistically they have the manpower to hold up their trains across one single street surely. yet agnes would rather cling to bannister's arm and leave a slug dirt trail in bertha's residence? is that some 19th century shade, or... lol. ofc i might be reading something wrong and they just thought nothing of it in the day, but it just seems like they were so particular with every other little minute detail. especially in social proceedings.
i understood when agnes >!ran across the street in her daywear earlier, on discovering bannister's "betrayal"!<. though, the ball is certainly a different situation.
if anyone can provide context/clue/answer, by all means enlighten me! tyia
