A while back I was involved in a drug case in the UAE. In my own statement to authorities, I named a friend as the person who supplied it to me. I've since been deported and am no longer in the UAE.
My friend was convicted (5 years + deportation) and has now filed an appeal. His side wants me to give a video testimony to support the appeal.
Here's my problem: I'm now unsure my original statement was fully accurate, and I don't want to just say whatever helps him — but I also don't want to contradict my own sworn statement without understanding what that could mean for me, especially given my own case history.
Questions I have:
Can I be compelled to testify from outside the UAE, or is this only if I agree?
If my new statement differs from my original one, what's the actual legal exposure for me (not just him)?
Does it matter that I'm no longer in the UAE / already deported?
Is there a "safe" way to correct an inaccurate statement without it looking like I'm lying now or lied then?
