Hiring Artist for SuperHero Comic!

Looking to hire an artist for the first issue of my superhero comic that could hopefully turn into a six issue run if all goes well! Hoping to find someone with a relatively quick turnaround time and who can draw in a similar type of style to something like INVINCIBLE.

Please link your portfolios down below. Thank you!

Hiring Advice

Hello all,

I'm a writer gearing up to hire an artist and fund a comic book. I was just looking for some advice on how this process typically works from the perspective of experienced collaborators:

  • What budget should I have? Is $50–100 per page (pencils/inks) the norm for professional-quality work?
  • How are the legal logistics typically handled so that I maintain ownership of the property? Is a written contract between the writer and artist generally sufficient?
  • What is typically included in a page rate? Is it usually just pencils and inks, or are things like lettering, covers, and character designs commonly included? What is generally billed separately? (other than of course coloring)
  • Is paying half before and half after the norm, or are milestone payments more common?
  • Can most artists consistently complete 22–24 pages per month at an appropriate quality level (think something like Invincible), or is that an unrealistic expectation?
  • Do most artists prefer receiving a fully detailed script (panel-by-panel) or a more open, Marvel-style script that gives them greater freedom over layouts and pacing?

If there are any other common mistakes or things a first-time writer should know before hiring an artist, I'd really appreciate any advice. Thanks!
