watching the oc for the thousandth time and can i vent about something?
i have such a love-hate relationship with seth cohen because, like... i know the guy was a total idiot sometimes. he was never a good boyfriend.
he was incredibly self-centered and had a massive superiority complex. honestly, though, i feel like that mindset was partly created by the very people who rejected him in the first place. by making him feel like an outsider for not liking the same superficial things they did, they ended up reinforcing the idea that his interests were somehow unique and that made him better than everyone else.
but what still pisses me off after rewatching the o.c. for the millionth time is how the writers completely downplayed his past. they treated it like a joke that he was constantly bullied, always alone, and that his only real friends were literally his parents.
i think a lot of his worst decisions came from fear. he was terrified of being abandoned and ending up back where he started. if it weren't for ryan, yeah, he probably never would've grown as a person.
and honestly, even though i love sethmer, i don't think seth deserved summer. i love summer, but if ryan hadn't stepped in, she probably would've kept treating him like a joke too.
