Journalist Anderson Cooper Discusses Former Haitian Presidential Candidate Yves Volel, Who Was His Math Teacher

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=c6vz20jtiM0

Anderson Cooper’s high school math teacher, Yves Volel, returned to his home country of Haiti and ran for president in 1987 but was later assassinated.

Despite the Haitian government’s efforts to destroy all the recordings, CBS News was able to broadcast audio of the shooting. “It was an extraordinary thing when I was a teenager to witness… it continued my desire to learn more about Haiti,” Cooper told 60 Minutes Overtime.

Levante UD takes its training project to Haiti to create opportunities through football

The initiative, promoted together with FC Ruben Haiti, will take place at the Park Saint Claire facilities from July 25 to 30.

Levante UD continues to expand its international training project with a new program in Haiti. The International Training area has organized the ID TALENT HAITI event from July 25 to 30, an initiative aimed at young Haitian footballers born between 2008 and 2013.

The project will be carried out in collaboration with FC Ruben Haiti, an academy created with a clear social objective: to provide support, education, training, and future opportunities to boys and girls through football, facilitating access to educational assistance through the foundation linked to the organization.

The collaboration between clubs will mark a milestone for the granota entity, as it is the first time Levante UD carries out a training initiative in Haiti. In this way, the initiative consolidates the international expansion of its Training Area and its commitment to development projects linked to sports.

Training and social commitment

The project will allow the International Training Area to share its working model in a new context and continue creating spaces for exchange between different football realities. The program aims to create opportunities, especially through education, training, and the values represented by this badge.

Institutional agenda in Haiti

The trip will also include an institutional agenda aimed at strengthening ties with various entities in the country and gaining first-hand knowledge of Haiti's sports and social context. The delegation will visit the country's Football Federation and the Spanish Embassy. Additionally, they will hold meetings with local entrepreneurs to explore possible avenues of collaboration that contribute to the promotion of projects aimed at talented youth.

French Goalkeeper for the World Cup, Mike Maignan, is Half Haitian

"Born in Cayenne, French Guiana, but brought up by a single Haitian mother in Villiers le Bel, a northern suburb of Paris, Maignan did not like school and a lot of training centres turned him away because of his poor academic results. In 2009, PSG’s youth academy took a chance and yet Maignan almost quit. He was, in his words “fed up” with the monotonous routine of waking up, going to class and training. All he wanted to do was play football."

"I’m so proud to be the official artist representing Haiti for Fox Sports FIFA World Cup 2026!!!!!! 🇭🇹🇭🇹🇭🇹🇭🇹🇭🇹🇭🇹

This piece comes from a place that’s deeply personal. It’s about our people, our fans, and the joy, pride, and energy we carry for both our country and the game. I wanted to capture that feeling of celebration, of showing up for one another, and of honoring where we come from.

This moment means so much, especially during Haitian Heritage Month. I thought about my ancestors while creating this, about the spirit and resilience that live in all of us. This is bigger than me, it’s for our players, our history, and everyone who has been waiting for this moment since 1974.

There’s so much woven into this piece that I can’t wait to share more of. For now, I just want to say how proud I am of our team and our community. I’m rooting for Haiti, always 🇭🇹"

The Caracol photovoltaic solar power plant project, located in the Caracol Industrial Park (PIC), represents a significant advancement for Haiti's electrical system. With an installed capacity of 13.4 MW, it is the largest solar project ever undertaken in Haiti and the first to be directly integrated into the national grid. This $57 million project, financed by the Inter-American Development Bank (IDB), aims to reduce the country's dependence on fossil fuel-powered thermal power generation.

Designed to meet the critical energy needs of the PIC and surrounding residential areas, the Caracol solar power plant relies on an innovative hybrid system that guarantees reliable 24/7 electricity. This system includes 13.4 MW of photovoltaic power generation, a battery energy storage system (BESS) to smooth production and manage peak demand, and backup thermal units used only as needed to ensure continuity of service.

This architecture reduces the cost per kilowatt-hour while improving the stability of the local grid, a key factor for the region's industrial competitiveness.

Progress of the Construction Site and Gradual Commissioning :

The Caracol solar power plant, built by Ssangyong Engineering & Construction under the supervision of the National Energy Regulatory Authority (ANARSE), has reached significant milestones. The photovoltaic installations now cover a considerable area, and the grid connection equipment is being progressively installed.

Site visits have been conducted in recent months to assess the progress of the construction, the quality of the installed equipment, and the compliance of the work with international technical standards. The plant will be commissioned gradually to ensure seamless integration with existing storage systems and thermal power units, without disrupting the electrical grid.

The deployment of solar energy in Caracol will bring significant benefits on several levels:

• Energy Independence: A substantial reduction in the importation of petroleum fuels for thermal power generation.

• Employment Support: By guaranteeing access to energy for businesses in the Industrial Park, the project protects thousands of local jobs.

• Ecological Transition: A significant reduction in greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions, enabling Haiti to meet its international climate commitments.

Thanks to its scale and integrated nature, the Caracol solar power plant is a national benchmark for the development of large-capacity grid-connected solar projects. It paves the way for a new generation of energy infrastructure that can be replicated and adapted in other regions of the country.
