How should I remove crazy crabapple suckers?
This is an old crabapple tree in CO. Every year I cut back the suckers during the growing season, but have never done a thorough cut below the soil. This year I decided to excavate the area with a hose (just a typical “jet” stream attachment) and I’ve found a pretty crazy “colony” of suckers.
I haven’t even found the crown or roots yet and there’s actually not much soil left to remove because of the density of these suckers. Should I try digging a trench further out and try removing more soil from the side, or can I just start attacking with a mattock from the top and hope this stuff rips off the top of the roots?
